Laptop Crashes When left/right clicking a large file

My laptop crashes when left/right clicking any large movie file over 6GB. I've been having this problem for a while and it's incredibly frustrating having to power my laptop off each time. It happens on both my C: Drive and external HD

    Things I've tried:

    Defragmentation
CC Reg Cleaner + General Cleanup
    Malwarebytes Scan
    sfc /scannow
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    chkdsk c: /f /r

I've also run ShellExView and disabled non microsoft context menu handlers one by one.

Any help would be much appreciated

I posted this 3 weeks ago and still haven't resolved the issue. The problem occurs even without clicking - just hovering over the file briefly with the cursor is enough to make my computer crash. Any help would be much appreciated

It sounds as though you've done a thorough test (in post# 1).

Is this only a problem with video? (of a certain kind avi, mov, wmv?)
    I got the large part

Try looking at how your system is indexed. If the file(s) are being indexed for content, large files might cause an issue. I've found a few problems were related to Search, the crawler, and indexing. Some I couldn't figure out how they were connected, but revisiting the index fixed the issue

First, if the files are in a folder that is included in a Library, remove that folder from the Library. Libraries are automatically indexed.

Then open Control Panel -> Indexing Options
    Press the [Modify] button

Press the [Show all locations] button
Deselect entries that don't hold personal data
    Press [OK]

    Press the [Advanced] button
    Press the [Rebuild] button
    Press [OK]
    Press [Close]

The Index will be rebuilt - it might take a few hours. Think about doing this over night.

Basically, you do NOT want the content of large files included in the index.

That's about all I can think of, good luck.

Have you tried reloading VLC, or opening VLC then opening the file? It could be that either VLC is corrupt, or your video files are corrupt.

One year later and i'm still experiencing this issue. It's not just limited to video files, but even audio files, or folders large in size. Basically my system crashes when either selecting an icon, or hovering over it with the cursor to check file size, date created etc.

I'm determined to get to the bottom of this as I'm fed up of having to shut my laptop down with the power button. I need this laptop for work and can't afford to damage it any further.

Maybe you can find in this thread some ideas to tackle it.
Opening certain folders causes Windows Explorer to crash

Maybe this could be helpful too.

I am assuming that this could be related to a default program that is used to open your media (audio/video) files. Using the post above mine, try seeing if you can change the association of a certain video type to open using a different media player (try Media Player Classic https://mpc-hc.org/). Then left/right click on that media file, does the same thing happen? If that fixes it, try to reinstall your VLC and hope it would work.
