i was in the video folder and set it up the way i wanted to
columns and everything and wanted to apply it to all subfolders in the video folder
clicked on view/options/folder options
clicked apply to folders and it applied it to everything...
but it said of this type...

reset folders did nothing except reset the video folder
resetting the default did nothing
cause it made it the default for everything...

how can i get the general and picture templates etc back to where they were?
yes the video folder's ok...

never done this before
i always did them one at a time
but i thought this'd be easier...

thanks for any help you can give...

ok... i see...
you need to be in a folder of each type
and use reset folders in each one... or so i thought...

i went in the documents folder and reset it there
it reset everything to the general view
all the libraries and everything
which is fine...

i can set the videos folder back the way it was
but i have a hundred folders under pictures

how can i set the pictures folder back to use large icons
without affecting anything else?

can i?

I would say click on the folder & select Large Icons in View.
I could be wrong.
You could test it. :)

if every folder was set to use the video template,
i didn't do it...

wait... if every folder was set to use the video template
it would have been using it and it wasn't
every folder was using the template it should have been
pictures using the pictures template
video for videos, general for everything else
(i guess the documents use the same as general...)

it was only when i clicked apply to folders
when in the videos folder (the standard one)
that it applied the video template to everything

i used the two batch files
Restore_Default_Folder_Templates
which didn't do anything
so i tried
All_Folders_Use_General_Items_Folder_Template
which didn't do anything either...

it was only when i went to the documents folder
and chose reset folders there
that i got the general template back,
but for everything...

i'd like the pictures template back
(for the pictures folder of course)
but if this is too complicated
i might just do what i was doing
and set the folder views one at a time
cause windows is remembering the settings like it should
no problem with that...

ok i will try that
but i just had a thought...
when i used the all folders use general batch file
it said it would take away the ability
for windows to detect the content
like if there's a picture in the folder
and set it up that way...

it would be nice to have that back...

You could manually change the template for the pictures folder to "Pictures", then set it's view how you like and "Apply to Folder" to apply to all folders that use the "Pictures" templates.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/9278-folder-template-change-windows-8-a.html

that was it! that's what i was looking for... :)
pictures folder back to normal
thank you...

as far as Automatic Folder Type Discovery goes,
i might try it later,
cause i thought it might be a substitute
for what i really wanted...
but i may find out i like it this way without it...

You're welcome.

Basically when "Automatic Folder Type Discovery" is enabled, the folder template automatically changes to optimize the folder to match the file type when it's saved in the folder.

now that i think about it
it used to bug me when i'd add an mp3 to the video folder
and it'd change so i might leave it as it is...

case solved, everything's fine, thank you...
