URGENT! Windows Server replaced my OS!

Basically i tried setting up IIS on my PC so i downloaded a 4GB Windows Server 2012 R2 from microsoft Demo Version and when the installer prompt and asked me where do i want Windows Server 2012 R2 to be installed (Which Drive) i wasn't paying much attention so i clicked on C Drive which is Windows 8 Operating System Folder and Windows Server 2012 removed my Operating System and replace with Windows Server 2012.

My personal files are still inside i check using cd command in cmd and it is accessible.]

When i boot up, it show me Windows Server 2012 R2 logo instead of Windows 8 and the login is totally different from Windows 8 so i set the Admin password and login and all i see is a black screen with a CMD.

I tried selecting boot options and i only found Windows Server 2012 as a option, no windows 8 no nothing.

I do not want to do a full clean restore i need the files and the files are extremely important.

So the C Drive has currently Windows Server 2012 and all my personal files inside.

How do i remove windows server 2012 and get back to windows 8 without losing any single files from C Drive?

    Thanks experts!

I don't think you can? You'll have to backup your files to external media and reinstall Windows 8 or 8.1. You can get install media here, Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help that will let you install and activate Windows 8.1 with a Windows 8.0 or 8.1 product code. It will even use your OEM embedded keys automatically.

If it still works, you could also try doing a factory recovery. I think you'll find that it doesn't work any more though. Try it if you want to go back to the factory setup. Like I said though, backup your files first.

I don't know how to do what you want but somebody else might? I'm doubtful it can be done but it won't hurt to wait a bit and see if anybody that's a full IT guy can sort it out.

I do believe the Start Screen is turned off in server, have a look at this, Windows 8 / Windows Server 2012: Start Screen and User Interface Part 2 - Ask the Performance Team - Site Home - TechNet Blogs < I only glanced at it as I have to go out at the moment. I'll have a good look latter on.

this is just a guess as I have every only installed a server version one or twice, at the cmd ,what happens if you type ,explorer.exe

if nothing ,I think you might have to remove the drive and get file off by means of an external device hooked to another computer ,but again iam just guessing as someone else who uses server 2012 R2 might have other suggestions

What happens if you press the Windows logo key on your keyboard? Is it just a blinking cursor or are you actually in an open command window? Try typing in exit and hitting enter.

Dependent on which version of Server 2012 you have installed you could try this

How to Turn the GUI Off and On in Windows Server 2012

Of course I would have to advise manual transfer of all your data before this, but it should be a safe option
