Windows 8.1 apparently has reverted to 8

I have a friend who wants some help. She has a computer that was used by her grandson. It was Windows 8 when she got it but we upgraded it to 8.1 and set it up as her computer. She has been using it for about eight or nine months now with no problems, it seemed there was no trace of her grandson't stuff but she has just rung me to say that when she turns it on now, it goes to the log in part for her grandson and she also thinks it is now Windows 8. again, not 8.1. I have to help her tomorrow and would appreciate any suggestions of how it can be fixed. Has anyone else had this happen?

    Thanks,
    Unibeck1

First off verify that it is in fact 8.0 and not 8.1. Open the System screen and see what it lists under Windows edition. On my PC in small print it says Windows 8.1, but the large blue text to the right just says Windows 8. If it is Windows 8.0, my guess is the grandson did a factory recovery to fix or cover up something he did. If it is just Windows 8.0, doing all the available Windows updates should make the upgrade to 8.1 available as an option in the Windows Store. You do the upgrade though the windows store.
