Transferring large files to USB hard disk

    Hi

I am transferring a large backup file 229 GB from internal HDD to USB HDD. Halfway through the transfer the transfer rate slows from 25 mb/s to about 8 mb/s. So I pause the transfer on the dialog and it restarts at 25 mb/s. If I had left it it would have taken ages to complete at 8 mb/s. Any ideas why it dropped and why pausing got it back to full speed?

Hi mine does that too it drops when it gets to a big file or the disk is getting used by something else when you pause it the computer must start using paging file in the ram so when you start it's fullspeed again till something else lags it are you running just a desk top plug and play drive or a powered dock type?

For files that size I recommend to use a SSHD (Computer Parts, Laptops, Electronics, and More - Newegg.com) connected to USB3 or eSata.

So how come they are so cheap what the down side or are they better for storage than used as a active drive?

The SSHDs are very good for sequential write/read of large files. They are not so good as system drives - compared to SSDs. A system drive lives on very fast random accees time where a spinning disk cannot match a SSD - in fact it is appr. 150 times slower.

I have made a performance comparison (SSHD, SSD and HDD) writing images. That is a sequential write operation:

now i have this m.2 ngff 42mm ssd cards.. I am thinking about using that for windows 8.1 install and using a regular samsung 840 evo for applications and data.. have you run any tests using m.2 ngff 42mm cards? i currently have a mydigitalssd super cache 2 m.2 card.. only 64 gigs but that will hold windows 8.1 no problem.. i just haven't determined if it will be better to put windows on my 840 evo SSD or the mini m.2 ngff 42mm card..

I never used such a card. But if I understand that right, they are only a PCI-e interface for the SSD (rather than a normal Sata port). I would first check whether the card is compatible with my PC.

Then I would still prefer a traditional SSD installation. Is probably less trouble.

i've already read that some people have installed windows to the m.2 NGFF mini cards... i have a 64 gig mydigital ssd and I updated the firmware (which froze on me and i thought i lost it but when i restarted it appeared to update the firmware??)

so anyway, I was thinking to put windows 8.1 on the m.2 64 gig and just leave that for some small applications and windows only.. and then use my samsung 840 evo 250gig (which is still too small) for games/big applications..
