Not sure if I have windows 8 or 8.1, computer confused?

By going to "view what operating system you are running", my computer says my edition is Windows 8.1. Not only do I never recall updating from 8 to 8.1 but following this link http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6042-adaptive-brightness-turn-off-windows-8-a.html my pc settings are different-there is no option for adaptive brightness. Which leads me to believe I have windows 8, not 8.1, I just hope it doesn't cause any conflicts. Thanks.

To determine if your laptop or computer monitor supports adaptive brightness, look for the Enable adaptive brightness setting in Power Options in the steps below. If the Enable adaptive brightness setting is not available, then it doesn't support adaptive brightness.

What does it say in Computer Properties ?

Doesn't the search icon appearing against your login name on the Start screen tell you that you have 8.1 rather than 8?

What about in System Information?

I just tested it works in powershell(86x) and powershell ISE too...
