Setting Up Appearance Of Desktop

I have alot of my current sites and programs accessible via icons on my screen. With Windows8, they say this cannot be done since it is a "tab-based" screen (I use a mouse, not my fingers). I disagree, I am certain when I do get my new PC set up with Windows8, I ought to be able to configure my screen to look similar to the way it does now in WindowsXP Pro . . . .correct? Not to forget, I can also install old software like Photoshop 6.0 to run in Windows8, along with older web editing software like FrontPage2002 . . . correct?

Absolutely. Just install a Start Menu program like Classic Shell (free) or Start8 ($4.99), then you can set it up the same as it is now.

Thanks Rich. Here is basically how my WindowsXP Pro screen looks right now - so I can make it appear (even if it is similar, I don't care....just simple to access, like in this shot would be OK with me) like you say?

^^^ wow, that's a well populated desktop! Just using the standard W8 desktop (+ Classic Shell or similar for a familiar start menu and some extra options) and you should feel very at home, never needing to use or even see any square tiles, or use touch. Good luck.

A desktop like that would drive me nuts, but yes, you can set up Win 8.1 to look the same.

as you can see though, some will ttake me to Word Document files I have addresses stored on, others will take me to links that are tutorials for building specific web pages and techniques in Wordpress and some to Internet Explorer etc. It's just easier that way....at least for me. But now that I see this, I really appreciate knowing I can tailor the look of my desktop. Another question, can Windows8 accompodate Microsoft's FrontPage2002 web editing software? And what about Adobe Photoshop version 6.0? These are older programs, and ma curious. Thank you for the help.

I would say yes, but I don't know for sure as I don't use it, I do know you can still install and run Office XP Pro, aka Office 2003 so I believe Frontpage 2002 will still work.

wonderful to heaar all this input. What I have done is made a note of it, and am making a checklist for my tech person to add when he builds my new system for me. I may have mentioned he can offer me a free upgrade to Windows10 from version8 after that operating system is finalized. It's also great hearing about old programs working in these new operating systems....that was one aspect that's had me so apprehensive about getting upgraded. This forum is excellent. I hope it is alrigh to show what I do. Here it is: Cartoons for Licensing and I first built this site in 2002 using Frontpage2002....it was a nightmare, I knew nothing about web editing or HTML but dove in. This latest site was built using Wordpress, has over 4,000 categorixzed cartoons throughout plus about 8,500 separate pages. I also offer webmasters / designers an auto-updating free daily cartoon (to non commercial sites) and all they need is a line of code I provide that can easily be pasted into the html for the page you want it on. Thanks for helping me here. Your advice is excellent......

StartIsBack is superior to ClassicShell because it allows you to change the icon to a few other choices... a very nice feature.
But I'm not sure if this program will stop working after the 30 days trial? Anyway might want to look into StartIsBack if you care about icon changing.
