    DVD Player for MP4 ? OR Format converter

    OK, I know it sounds off topic, but...

    Last week, I finally succumbed to the constant spousal "encouragement" to convert our old home videos of the kids growing up to DVDs.

    I bought a video adapter that saves the files as MP4. Like a dope, I assumed all of these DVDs would play OK so I did the entire pack of old VHS tapes. I then burned a total of 43 GBs in files to DVDs and they looked pretty good when I sampled them on the PC.

    I gave them to the better-half and she popped the first one in the DVD player in the lounge and bingo - "no Play," comes up on the screen. What???? It seems my less than two-year old, Panasonic DVD player does not do MP4. {sigh}

    Now I am looking for a new DVD player that will play MP4 or some free/cheap software convert them to something else and re-burn to a format the Panasonic will play.

    Any suggestions to help me out of my dilemma, and no, divorce is not one of them.

    Z, did you miss this?
    "and re-burn to a format the Panasonic will play"

    I had already done the searching for converters and in fact did an online conversion to avi of one short vid. The Panasonic again said, "no play," to avi.

    You might want to check out Windows 7 with DVD Maker. Okay, just kidding. There is a thread in this forum with a link to a very long discussion about the loss of DVD Maker after an 'upgrade' to Windows 8. Although I never used DVD Maker, supposedly, one can use it to burn a DVD with mp4 files and the DVD will play. Alas, here we are.

    There were some suggestions and workarounds in that discussion. $ and $$.

    You need the files in .vob format, that is what DVD players recognize. The better solution would be an actual DVD file creator and burner software. Then you could even make menus if you got real creative.

    Something like this: Sothink DVD Creator, Burn DVD, Any Video to DVD

    I was responding to this part:

    Popeye has the answer though. You need software that generates a video disc. I use Roxio for this.

    Ashampoo Free is supposed to be able to do this as well: Ashampoo Burning Studio Free - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com

    Just be careful when using CNET as it often tries to bundle other junk with the program you want.
