    Microsoft - Lack of Support

Ever since I got my new pc I have been attempting to contact MS Support in the UK to answer a very simple problem.

I bought Windows Media Center from Arvato GmbH in Germany. Their email address is none functional. When I bought it it fitted into the pc great, then my pc broke.

I have a new pc and nobody seems to want to help. I called the UK support number to be told that the number has changed to a 'less expensive' number - so I dialed that. After the usual robitic responses I actually reached a human being, although speaking a barely distinguishable accent. I told her the full history. 'Now let me get this straight, you have Windows 8.1'? 'Yes' I said 'but the problem is Media Center product key not working in Add Features in 8.1 - I have paid for a product that I cannot download.'

    *click* nobody on line

After several attempts to call them back, I got a phone ringing somewhere, and ringing, and ringing - you get the picture? Then another robot told me there is an error *click*

After another few attempts I gave up.

If Apple Macs were not so damn expensive I would stick MS where the sun does not shine.

Edit: Wow! finally got to 'speak' to MS via social media software. Gave them the details, we shall see ........

I purchased windows 8 pro and media center retail product keys when 8 first came out..
I recently re-used both key numbers to install on a NEW computer. this is allowed with retail keys, but it is limited in time frame.. You can not do this with oem keys... First disconnect from your internet connection, input the key, activate via phone.. had to do it for the pro key and then again for media center

    Hi there

Customer support from ANYBODY is probably non existent these days -- At least in the UK there's enough contact with Indian / other Asian people so you can get used to their accents --try phoning from ICELAND and having to understand those Indian accents.

Off shored call centres IMO should be OUTLAWED and any product should only be offered for sale in countries where a SATISFACTORY and local customer service dept exists. If not the permission to sell the product should be withdrawn.

    Cheers

    Good luck.

I used to have a phone number I could use to call Microsoft with & actually talk to a human.
It was set up so instead of being kept on hold, you could hang up & they would call you back.
They did a RPC for me & fixed my problem & didn't charge me anything.
    This was years ago...

    edit---

Have you tried here---{it may be free}---

    https://support.microsoft.com/Contac...?wa=wsignin1.0

You can chat or get a phone call.

Hi Jim, not allowed to name names, but my host company has brilliant support, as does the software for my forum, also the company that my domains are registered with. Maybe I am just lucky?

I would not even bother to go to those help lines. Our forums are a much better source of support.

That is, however, different for certain applications. I just got excellent support from the Camtasia team (via email). I also had a similar experience with the Norton help line.

I agree about the forums, this one is excellent BUT, this is a product key problem so source I think is best.

I have had contact from MS, they are passing this onto Support UK and asked for contact detials which I passed on so hopefully something is going to happen. Its not that Media Center was expensive, quite the opposite, but its the principle.

The whole licence key system is a giant joke. There was some sence in it when not almost all computers were online. But nowadays it would be very simple to check if a certain key has been used on several computers over a certain period. This would be a very accurate indicator of abuse that would not annoy paying customers and stop multi use of a single licence. Ok, the eremit that lives alone in the woods and uses it's solar powered tablet to play a round of solitaire would be able to install Windows on two different tablets using the same key and he would probably never be discovered. But MS, would that really hurt? All those anti piracy measures do no good at all. To this day no copy protection has ever been developed that would last for more than a few weeks. All those anti piracy solutions do one thing and one thing only: Annoy paying and loyal customers. You don't know how many times I have cursed all those game launchers and activation tools. More than once I've sworn next time I would download myself an illegal copy since running it is far more painless when compared to getting the original and beeing stuck in the registration process.

    Hi there

    Very true

There's certain common Office activators around that probably are used more than LEGIT versions of Office - Ms would probably make MORE money by allowing Office to go open source and assisting developers with good "add-ons".

Whether it's movies, music, eboooks or whatever - no system of Licence keys or DRM has ever even BEGUN to stamp out piracy. Better to work WITH users than try stupid counter measures that last all of 5 Mins.

Look at the ridiculous regional DVD encoding systems or even the utterly stupid attempts to try and block access to well known torrent sites -- that stuff lasts about 2 secs too.

Make content WORLD WIDE available at the same time, charge sensible prices and realize there's different distribution systems --who actually BUYS DVD's these days !!! - I'd pay for a legit download or stream -- but those are scarce and even Netflix gives different content in different countries --total rubbish when we have a WORLD WIDE web !!!

    Cheers
