Just my thoughts. I'm ok with paying for a good piece of software. But I'm not ok with making loyal customer's lives more complicated than necessary. It is the same with so many things: We annoy those folks that do everything right just because there are some that do it wrong. And because we cannot accept that there are some that do not play according to the rules we make everything worse. In German we have a saying: Es kann nicht sein was nicht sein darf. I don't know if such a saying exists in English too but translated word by word it would be something like: It cannot be what's not allowed to be.

your translation makes much sense. And a good saying too. As far as I am concerned, when software is legitimately purchased, the code section should also include a support number for paid up members on introducing the code to the person at the other end. Thats the fair way, and it removes the pirate from calling them. I also register all purchased packages with the originator, not that it actually helps. I am also a signed up member of the MS Community!

I recently re installed Microsoft Expression 4 back into my pc. There was a message telling me that thew code had 'outstayed its welcome' and that I should ring this number *************** whatever it was, to get an auto code to unlock it, which I did. It worked just fine. So why cant I get a simple answer from MS about my purchased copy of Media Center. I cannot download it in order to get that simple solution on my screen!!!

Is the key accepted when you type it in? If yes does it then fail activation? I have 4 MC keys that I snagged when Microsoft was offering them free. I take care to always use the same key on the same PC it was originally activated on. I had one laptop die and then used that key on its brand new replacement. It failed activation but I was able to do the phone activation. When asked if it was only installed on one PC I said yes. I got the automated code to type in and it then activated fine. I've used those same MC keys in Windows 8.0 and 8.1 with no issues. Some, like you have not been so lucky.

EDIT: You know you have to be running Pro to upgrade to Media center right? I ask because you have Windows 8.1 listed in your system specs. If I don't see Pro listed I assume it's only Core.

Win 8.1 Home. And thanks for the info, why should Media Center not work in 8.1 Home? I had Pro but again, its a question of downloads not being allowed to repeat. I have a new pc. MS offered me 8.1 Pro free when I bought 8, but it does not show now. When I put in the code in the Media download page in Add Features it just comes up 'not valid'.

Just found this: No way am I paying Ł100 for this:

Add features to Windows 8.1 *

If your PC is running Windows 8.1, you can get Windows 8.1 Pro Pack and enjoy all the features of Windows 8.1 Pro as well as Windows Media Center for Ł99.99 ERP. To buy Windows 8.1 Pro Pack, follow the instructions on this page.

Can't remember if that free deal had to be activated by a certain time. Pretty sure it needs to be Pro edition.

Maybe if you have an image of your 8.0 Pro with media centre, doing an upgrade to 8.1 Pro might retain it.

Windows 8.1.1 Pro with Media Center

I recently restored my computer with my Factory recovery disks.
They replaced everything with 8 OEM.
I used my Microsoft Account to register the 8 OEM.
    Same email & password.

I downloaded Macrium using my Macrium serial number to get the Standard edition back with the boot time recovery environment.
I inserted my Macrium image on USB & reinstalled directly to 8.1.1 Pro with media center.

After installing the Macrium image I looked in System & saw that Windows was already activated.

I hope this information is useful.

Yeah, you need Pro to be able to add Media Center, that's why your code isn't working. You can buy the Pro Pack which includes Media Center, if you don't already have Pro. Or just buy Media Center if you are running Pro. If your only running Core Media Center will not install.
