Drives under My PC taking forever to "refresh" show up ?

Not sure what is causing this. It started taking forever for my drives to show up under my PC. Windows 8.1 64 bit all updates. I click on my PC and the status bar takes a really long time. I ran a disk repair, defrag, chdsk with no luck. For some reason my system stopped creating restore points.

Is there anything else I can do? Just not sure what would be causing this issue all of a sudden.

    Maybe running
    sfc /scannow
    &
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    &
    sfc /scannow AGAIN would help.

    All in administrator command prompts.

Do you regularly use disk cleanup, check for too many not needed startup programs.

Use this for recent chkdsk results post it here see how HDD is

    1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog, type powershell.exe, and press Enter.

    2. In PowerShell, copy and paste the command below, and press Enter.

    get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message | out-file Desktop\CHKDSKResults.txt

    3. You will now have a CHKDSKResults.txt file created on your desktop that is the log file of your chkdsk scan results from Event Viewer.

Task manager and resource monitor may point out bottlenecks in CPU, memory and disk.

    Hello Pittguy,

In addition, check using the tutorial below to make sure that you have Turn off hard disk after set to Never in your advanced power plan settings to see if that may be the issue. If this is turn on, then it would cause a short delay while waiting on a hard drive to spin back up when trying to access it after it had been automatically turned off when idle.

Thank you for your respondes. Is there any way I could upload the CBS log ? Possibly some files need replaced .

I also downloaded and 8.1 ISO image and am following the directions from another poster on this board to do a refresh without having to reinstall all my programs . It has been stuck On the "making sure it is ready to install " for close to two hours . Not sure if it has anything to do with the fact I have used about 75% of my 1 gig primary drive

If you meant 75% of your 1 TB drive instead of GB, then yeah it could take a while with that much.

It keeps on getting to 96 % then it says it's a failed install. Deleted temp files. Really weird though. My drive issue is fixed in terms of taking forever to show under my PC. Maybe I should just be happy for now with the way it is.

Never showed us the chkdsk log, just verify how the drive is. How old is drive and system working with ?
Refreshing or reset not going to solve bad hardware if any.
