I have no idea what causing your issue? You could try doing a Refresh or Reset.
    Refresh Windows 8
    Reset Windows 8
Read up on what each one does before you do it. You may want to save your personal files to external media before hand.

Yeah, I never encountered anything like it either. If it keeps happening I'll have to go ahead and reinstall. Thanks for the troubleshooting help though. Much appreciated.

If you go back into the Sound settings, and click test on each one, you might get lucky and identify the action that is producing that sound. If it doesn't match any of those my guess is its a hardware issue. Video or sound driver maybe. Just a guess on my part though. If you do decide to reinstall, create a few restore points while your at it. Before and after installing drivers. Then if it happens again you can fix it with system restore and try to sort out what's causing it. Me, I don't mind doing clean installs, I can almost do it with my eyes closed. Sometimes its quicker than trying to figure out what went wrong. Do you have recovery media or install media? If you want to clean install without all the OEM bloat you can download Windows 8.1 install media here, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create Option 1 will get you Windows 8.1 install media that will work with a Windows 8.0 key or a Windows 8.1 key or an embedded OEM 8.x key. I've long since abandoned the OEM 8.0 install on my laptop for a nice clean 8.1 install.

Will do. And usually I don't mind doing clean installs, but on this particular machine I have some Sample Libraries I use for music production and a clean install requires me to re-install all of the libraries or I get authentication errors. They have some pretty in depth protection on these things. It takes a good few days to get it all installed again, so I'm gonna probably do some trouble shooting in terms of not running specific programs and trying to rule out causes.

Could a PSU issue cause this? I ask mainly because of the igfx fault in OP.

I have the exact same issue.
    Running windows 7 though.

I'm thinking it's a USB issue and that my G19 keyboard may be part of the problem.
Running when I get the issues.
    G19 keyboard.
    Track IR
    Saitek x52 and rudders
    Steelseries mouse.
I have a very good PSU.
    I7 with 16gb ram
    Windows 7
    Asrock Extreme M motherboard.

I have had issues with USB conflicts and devices turning on and off.
I have disabled USB3 mode re conflicts between USB2 and USB3.

All bios drivers are the latest.

    Programs running at time.
    Elite dangerous
Voice attack <- could also be the issue
    Track ir

If I find a solution, I'll let you know.

    OK.. I installed this driver
    ASMedia_xHCI_Host_Controller_Driver_v1.16.12.0

there is apparently a 1.16.16.0 driver but all I got where spam sites so I tried this.

Not only have I not had the issue since yesterday, I now have no USB3 issues anymore.

Just search for that driver and give it a go. Hope this helps. Please let me know.
If my issue comes back, I'll post.

2 days with no issues so I believe it may be USB2 and USB3 compatibility issues.
The above fix did fix all my other issues where my devices would turn off and on.
So only using USB2 ports ATM. Will try re-introducing my USB3 hub soon but connected to a USB2 port.

I'm hoping kyle will post if he is using similar equipment and devices as I am. Would help me and other uses that may come across this post.

Still no issues. Seems that the usb3 hub may have been the issue.
