Solved Cannot Open Volume for Direct Access

I have two internal drives (not RAID). The D: drive has simply stopped working, so I wanted to do a chkdsk on the disk. I opened cmd as administrator and I did the following:

Open Volume.JPG

I hope you can see that better than I can. Anyway, what I did was run chkdsk as administrator, with the following command (after I got to the c: prompt rather than Windows/System32).

chkdsk d: /f /r /x

What I got was this message:

cannot open volume for direct access

Now I'm flummoxed. Any ideas on how to get to this drive and hopefully restore a ton of stuff that is on there? I cannot do a data recovery if I cannot access the disk, can I? I have another disk here, but really, REALLY, really don't want to lose all the data on the drive.

TIA,

Made

it could be that the drive is dead and check disk is not seeing the drive at all ,when I ran chkdsk d:\ it found mine with no issue and did a quick scan .

if you go to file manager ,and this pc ,does the d rive show there ,if so right click on it and go to tools and check of to run the scan

The drive is showing as D: only when I click on tools, I get the same message. This is why I'm flummoxed -- it is showing a D: drive,

as a removeable, but nothing happens. Here's another shot:

As you can see, I can access Tools, but tools cannot access the drive. If the drive is indeed dead, is there ANY way to save/recover the data? I suspect not, but am asking out of the hope there may be SOMETHING that can be done without sending it out.

my experience is limited ,but when I have or seen this type of issue ,I use a Linux live boot disk,to check the drive for files .some time I find them sometimes I don't .
other time I remove it from the computer and use a usb sata connector to see if I can view the file on another computer

Sounds like a failed card to me. Just thinking maybe you should contact the manufacture of the Card perhaps they have a tool that might recover it? At least tell you it has failed:think:
