Ummm, no you don't! In fact, having to reboot after updating Windows is a common user complaint, so Microsoft has attempted to minimize how often it is needed.

And they have done that but sometimes, it is still necessary. It just depends on what Windows files are being updated, and what files you have open at the time that cannot be updated when opened. So they get updated during the next reboot. Note that MSE and WD in W8 are updated via Windows Update almost daily to sometimes more than once a day. There would be a whole lot of angry users if they had to reboot after each of those.

For the record, I typically go 3 weeks or longer without rebooting - and I do keep my computer updated in a timely manner. I just let it go to sleep, unless prompted to reboot. But if something goes awry, rebooting is a first step in troubleshooting.

If a reboot is needed after an update you "should" be prompted to reboot. If not needed, you "should not" be prompted. But sadly, some 3rd party apps routinely call for a reboot - often to sink hooks you many not want set (WinPatrol is good at detecting some of them).

But that said, I installed the same updates yesterday and was prompted to reboot. Did you maybe postpone rebooting and forgot?

Still, rebooting after applying updates does not, or should not anyway, hurt anything.
