The Swamis Predict

Regardless of what you actually want, what do you BELIEVE the final version of Windows 8 will include?

I'm convinced that MS is monitoring this forum (Which is a good idea) and they are also conducting their own surveys. Based on this, I predict:

The Start button will be included on the desktop.
You will be able to choose whether desktop or Metro is your default screen.
They'll fix that blasted Solitaire game.

I don't believe they'll be any significant changes between now and release. There's been no major changes, over and above, what we seen in Windows 7, moreover, the traditional desktop has been relegated to application status. Also, from what I understand, there's a licence check that prevents the Windows 8 client pre-loading the desktop and also from bypassing Metro easily. This is not present in Server 8 when running the Desktop Experience Pack.

As far as the start button, as you've probably noticed, there's the Power User Tasks Menu / Power User Tasks Menu which serves the purpose, for some and for Microsoft to 'put it back' would be an admission of defeat. Plus, they've already said the Windows 8 Start button isn't coming back...

The Windows 7 games can be made to run, with a bit of effort.

Charms will be somewhat tweaked. I imagine there may be an improved method for accessing non-metro apps and applets.

I could see Office 2012 Starter being included with the OS (that's already done with new computers), but I'm somewhat split. All new Windows 8 computers, even ARM tablets, will come preloaded with Office 2012; so it sort of makes sense to bundle it with installation disks/downloads (or make it a free download).

Windows 8 will keep its pre-loaded anti-virus program AND continue to make it automatically turn off if you install another anti-virus program.

MS would never intentionally turn off its native antivirus. It's the 3rd party softwares that do that when installed.

I've used free Microsoft AV programs on Win XP and Win 7, and when I installed other AV programs, they never shut anything off. I did it myself, but it wasn't automatic.

Whether a third-party security product disables either Defender or Windows 8 firewall seems to be highly variable, unlike Windows 7 - although that too has it's moments. I've installed most of the available security applications, current available, with alleged Windows 8 support, in most cases multiple times. On some installations, Defender gets turned off, in others, it doesn't. Likewise, the firewall. There also seems to be problems with these applications registering themselves consistently with the Security Centre.

I would hope they put back the Start button with the new logo on the bottom left corner, as it has been for 17 years on the Desktop. This would be a better replacement over the little Start thumbnail as it is now.

As for the start menu, nah! Not going to happen.

As for Start Screen boot or Desktop boot choices, probably not, at least without a hack.

The swami returns, and he predicts:

Less than sixty days after the release of Windows 8, there will be a third party app that will put Metro on a Windows 7 machine. However, it will be nowhere near as effective as the real one.

The swami returns with another prediction:

On desktops, Windows 8 will not be the success that either XP or 7 are, but it will not be the flop that Vista was. People who buy new PCs with 8 installed won't be demanding that 7 be installed instead. But for mouse and keyboard users, 8 offers little more than 7.

But on touchscreen mobile devices, 8 will excel. It will get more people willing to buy touchscreens computers, and Windows 9 will be an even bigger success.
