Hard drive error, can't connect to internet

About a month ago, my computer started acting up. The disk was running at 100% all the time and something in the unit was physically making a clicking noise. Eventually I got the classic windows 8 bluescreen with the big ol sad emoji on it. I looked up the error and after about an hour of trying to figure out how to launch into safe mode, I uninstalled AVG which was the supposed problem. My computer started working again.

Shortly after, it started running slowly again, crashing quite a bit, etc. every time I boot, I get a warning saying that I should back up all my info because there's a hard drive error. On top of this, I am unable to connect to the internet through wifi, Ethernet, and even USB tethering. Every time I try it back up my files, it freezes halfway through. I also am unable to turn on windows defender or antivirus. Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

Check your HDD Cable 1st for loose connection. Then run a test with HDD tool like HDD Regenerator.

I get a warning saying that I should back up all my info because there's a hard drive error.

I've been doing this a LONG time and have suffered through more than one hard disk failure and NEVER got a message telling me that I should back up my data! (Even though, I do this routinely anyway).

Sounds suspicious to me ...

Do you have some kind of hard drive SMART monitoring running that alerts you when some of the SMART parameters go beyond certain bounds? Asking, because that's the only kind of hard drive health monitoring software I've encountered.

Go to your hard disk manufacturers website, download their diagnostic tools and run the tests.
