Solved Unable to save files to Windows 8.1 folders?

OK, so I'm a former IT tech, and I have 5 computers with Win 8.1 in the house, and a Windows 7 home server.

One of the desktops has started *NOT* allowing its owner/user to save files to their appropriate folders, and now only allows files to be saved to the desktop.

I've thought of System Restore, but for two reasons, I have declined to use this option...

For reason one, we don't know how long ago this issue started.

And reason two, I'm not sure that this would fix the issue, given that the documents and such are on the Desktop, rather than in their respective folders...

Have you attempted for those users to "take ownership" of the folders having the issue?

What happens when you attempt to save the problem folders, do you get an "access denied" error message?

General files, and we're unable to save them to Documents, Pictures, Downloads, etc. - in their respective folders to organize them.

Have you attempted for those users to "take ownership" of the folders having the issue?

Yes, we get an "access denied" message, "do you want to save to Desktop instead?"

Take ownership? It's been a long time since I've seen this kind of problem, so I don't remember how to do that. I could use some pointers and additional information in this path of action, please?

If you try to move or copy to as in the picture, do you get the error message ?

sfc /scannow

Then---


Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Again ?

Have you scanned for malware?

Since you don't know how long this has been going on, I probably would not use System Restore either. But not because this problem affects the desktop - that is really just a folder too.

do you want to save to Desktop instead
Typically, when you search using the error message as your search parameters, you get information on the error. When I search using that search string, I get nothing! That suggests to me that is NOT the exact error message.

So, please try again and note the exact verbiage.

Scanning for malware with MalwareBytes returned a lot of results, and selecting to quarantine and remove the offending objects found by the scan corrected the problem.

Great! And you are welcome. Now you need to determine how all those offending objects got on your system in the first place. Is Windows fully updated? Are you using an anti-malware solution (like Windows 8's Windows Defender)? Is it kept updated? Do you have Windows Firewall enabled?

And most importantly, are you, the user and always weakest link in security, avoiding risky behavior like filesharing with torrents or via P2P sites that condone illegal filesharing of copyrighted songs, movies and other copyrighted materials? Are you avoiding visiting illegal pornography or gambling sites? Are you (including other users of your computer) avoiding being "click-happy" on unsolicited downloads, attachments and links?
