    No Operating System?

I started up my laptop as I always have and for some reason, the screen is black except for white words saying "No Operating System Found." I can't seem to get Windows 8.1 back up and running. Please help!

Sounds like a hard drive failure. How long is the computer, what is the mfg & model of it?

The computer is a Sony Vaio E14P and it is about a year and a half or two years old, and it's 14 inches

If you try to start it several (3-4) times, it should eventually boot to the Advanced Startup Options menu. If it does, select Troubleshoot then Automatic Repair.

I think the Advanced Startup Options Menu is part of Windows, and from what has happened so far, I think it has been deleted or something. The only menu I can get to is the VaioCare Rescue Mode. From there, the only link that works is the BIOS link. All of the other links lead me to the black "Operating System Not Found" screen.

Still does not matter. I have seen hard drives fail under six months old. You can try and boot up with a Xubuntu LiveDVD and see if you can rescue the documents, photos, music, etc. before you pull the drive.

If you can access the drive with the Linux Live DVD, then you know the OS is not corrupted. If you cannot access the drive at all. Then the drive is toast.

"No Operating System Found." can also be caused by a corrupted file system.

Do you have or can you borrow a Windows 8/8.1 install DVD? If so you could boot it and click on Repair your computer on the 2nd screen then keep going till you get to a Command Prompt. You could run chkdsk x: /r to fix any problems. The x: is what ever drive letter is assigned to the boot drive, it may not be C:.

To find it, enter bcdedit and look at the osdevice line to see what it is.

Alright, I've tried something different. What I have in mind is to install Windows 7 on the laptop (the hard drive is fine), download the Windows 8 installer, and hopefully, the product key will be embedded inside the BIOS. So far, I've gotten stuck on step one. I inserted the Windows 7 disc, but the screen freezes on the "Starting Windows" splash screen. I left it running for about 30 minutes, thinking that the computer was just really slow, but after coming back, it was still stuck on the same screen. The only things I can edit in the computer are the BIOS settings. Any help?

Ztruker, unfortunately, I don't have a Windows 8 installer DVD. The laptop came pre-loaded with Windows 8.

Again, the hard drive has failed. I do not know why you were attempting to try and install another OS. You need to get a new hard drive. As for the restore discs, those you will now have to order from Sony, since you did not make any when you got the machine.
