can't wake from sleep using keyboard or WOL

  1. #21

I take it that this is a very advanced BIOS. Is it UEFI?
I have both a standard BIOS and an EFI Shell

Seems like the wake management option in the BIOS is broke or not the correct BIOS for the new MoBo. It seems you're an advanced user and no disrespect with this question, but are you sure it's the correct BIOS?
This is the default BIOS that came with the motherbard. I checked MSI website and this is the latest version.
    BIOS version is E7721AMS V25.4

I currently have a ticket with MSI regarding the same issue, but they are very slow to reply. I asked them if they have any beta version that i could try.

I checked the customer reviews about this motherboard on newegg and amazon, and not a single user is reporting any problems with sleep or wake up event, this is weird

In the wake of Ronhp's post, it may be a quirk with certain systems just as the sleep problem. Although sleep works on most systems, some have non-sleep issues. There are a lot of variables that no one seems to pinpoint an exact cause. Pages of posts where the solution has not been found for over a years time.

    Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep
My system can go to sleep, but can't wake up.

I can put the system to sleep using the windows timer (advanced sleep after 120 minutes of inactivity). I have also enabled the option to hibernate using the windows power button in the start menu. And it also works through command line.

Ok. We'll just have to see what MSI thinks.

I was just using the sleep issue to illustrate that some systems simply have quirks that no one can solve. I'm surely hoping yours gets fixed. It'll be interesting to see what the problem is.

Got a reply from MSI, they tell me to just RMA the board. Useless customer support...

Yep i am also 99% sure this will not solve the problem. Most likely the new replacement board will have the same problem... I am in the process of RMA'ing this with newegg, but i asked for cross-shipping so i still have a couple of days to try other solutions if anyone have any suggestions...

If i have the same problem with the replacement motherboard, i'll just ask for a refund and buy a different brand. But that means i will have to format again and waste another 20 hours to configure Win8 for HTPC purpose.... Aaaaarghhhhh

I'm a loyal MSI customer, i have 2 gaming PC with high-end MSI motherboard and one MSI gaming laptop... First time i am disappointed with their support

Just noticed something weird on the "root USB controller"

the option "allow this device to wake up computer" is greyed out (even if i check the first option)

Not sure if it is related to my problem, as i have also tried to wake the computer from a PCI USB card. I have tried both USB2 and USB3 ports and the front ports of my case...

I have latest version of my BIOS. I even asked MSI if they had an unreleased beta version to let me try.

My settings are exactly the same than he one in your link. I will still try the DOS commands to see if i can find something wrong...

O.k. i was doing some research myself came across this. Maybe mine is grayed because not set in any way to use sleep.
Other people same issue was solved by BIOS update. Do see issues with Windows 8.1 and sleep kind of a lot.
Once i spoke to ASUS, i spoke directly to a motherboard tech, rather then there usual support members, he knew more.
    Could be same for MSI.

So i just switched to a mechanical HDD, formatted it and re-installed a clean version of Win 8.1 without ANY modifications (no applications, no windows update, no drivers).
The only thing i did after installing Win8.1 was to configure deep sleep/hibernation and USB devices wake-up.

The computer is still not waking up with any USB devices.

Then i installed the updates and the driver, and tried again wake from sleep. Still not working.

Next step is to re-install Windows 8.0 and check if it's working. I've read a lot of people complaining that they can't wake their computer anymore after upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1

It is a shame that 8.1 isn't even able to handle a function as basic as waking a computer from sleep, something that has been around for over 10 years.
