8.1 can't sleep/hibernate, long startup, no CD drive

Hello all; this is going to be a bit wordy though I'd appreciate any help you can offer. I run 8.1 on a Lenovo G500. Right after I downloaded 8.1, my laptop started experiencing some odd symptoms: it could no longer sleep or hibernate without either shutting down or falling into some limbo powered state, the overall startup time took several minutes (as opposed to about fifteen seconds or less), and my CD drive stopped being recognized.

At times it wouldn't even load, but I tried the trick where you start it up without the battery, which got it working but at that same slow pace. I tried running Windows Defender, the free download of McAfee, but nothing seemed to do anything. I uninstalled a few random programs which I hadn't heard of and which were updated with 8.1, and restarted it again with the battery trick. Somehow everything restored to normalcy which lasted for several days. One might think that the programs were the problem but today everything crashed back to where it was last week.

The catch is that 8.1 updated en masse yesterday, so I'm convinced that the OS itself is to blame. Have any of you encountered this issue? At this point I'm just waiting and hoping it'll get back to normal at which point I'll cancel any and all future updates.

What model exactly? Sometimes there are OEM ACPI and chipset drivers which can affect this.

I'm going to have to re-mark this as unsolved as the problem manifests itself again every time Windows updates.
