File explorer show files / folders in decent GROUP order

    Hi there

Is there any way to customize (or use an alternative to) File explorer.

Here's an example from DOLPHIN (a Linux type of File explorer) - breaks the folders down into decent alphabetical order and the files within them etc - makes navigation very easy indeed.

File explorer is a DOG compared to this - especially when you have large folders with loads of files in them -- the serach is better too !!!!.

    Cheers

    or for the free:

    FreeCommander - freeware file manager

There are others as well but some use the native explorer API's for search etc which may not be ideal.

    Hi there

Has a lot of features in it like batch renames etc but I don't think I need those or I can do that easily enough with a Linux script. Might give it a try though as it has a lot of possibilities.

Among which is the pricey Directory Opus - probably the best IMO. Have used it for years and is supported and upgraded quite well. Even works with Windows 10 Tech without a hitch! Free 60 day trial.

Is there any way to customize ... File explorer.
Sure! Have you played with "Group by" and "Add columns"? There are well over 300 column options you can sort on besides the normal Name, Date Modified, Type, and Size.

The tools integrated into Windows are considered "basic" tools and that is okay, and as it should be for an OS! Because the OS's primary responsibility is making all the discrete hardware components work together in unison to support the software programs run on it - safely. Anything more is just extra - some may consider extra "fluff" or "bloat".

But File Explorer in W8 is much more than a basic directory tree viewer, if given a chance - without being a "dog" about it either. If you explore its options, you may find, like Disk Optimize (Windows defragger), Windows Disk Cleanup, Windows Firewall, Calculator, Snipping Tool and more, that the "basic" integrated tool is all you really need.

Of course, if you are manipulating files and folders extensively and frequently, a more advanced tool may be desired - and Windows accommodates that too.
