Solved Have to Cut Power Off and On to Computer for normal Boot

So the problem is that every night before I go to bed I cut the power off to my computer, meaning I flick the light switch in my room which provides power to all my PC components, because they take power even when the computer is off. Sometimes when I flick it on the next morning, and turn my computer on, the startup takes longer than usual, and when I do get logged in, windows explorer is constantly crashing. Like, crash after crash. The only way to fix this is to cut the power off (flick the light switch), and then flick it back on, and turn the computer back on. Then it performs normally. So to me this is really strange, but maybe someone has an explanation as to the reason why this is occurring?

Is your computer completely shut down before you throw the switch and do you use a surge protector.

Well sometimes I just flick the light switch because shutting down is taking too long, not always though. Yeah I do have a surge protector

Never, repeat never, cut power until the system has shut down properly. You have probably scrambled the system and will have to do a factory restore. Make it a habit to cut power via the surge protector after the system shuts down. Using light switches has power fluctuations when they are turned on at first that even the surge protector can compensate for.

If it's "taking too long" for your computer to shut down, there's something wrong with it. If you have Fast Boot enabled, your are right that the machine uses some power all the time. To to a "complete" shutdown, hold down the Shift key while clicking Shutdown. Then you could safely flick off the light switch or just unplug the computer.

Oh wow, ok, I never thought that would be a problem because I have a surge protector, makes sense though. I turned it off from the surge protector last night :)

Yeah I think some programs or something I have were causing the shutdown to hang; I know this because I went into safe mode and shutdown was almost instantaneous. I think I've found the offending programs, and fixed it. Time will tell. For now I guess I will mark this thread as solved, thanks guys!

Your welcome, just be sure the computer completely shuts down before turning the power off.
