Windows update notification in taskbar

I have windows updates set to notify me when they become available so I can download and install them when I want.
In Windows 7, when new updates are available, I get a notification icon in the taskbar. But in Windows 8.1 (I work entirely in the desktop, not the metro view), the notification appears in the login screen, but not in the notification section of the taskbar.

I looked at customizing options in the taskbar but there doesn't appear to be an option to add an update notification icon to the taskbar. Is there a way to make it appear in the taskbar in 8.1 like in Windows 7?

Thank you. This is a new laptop that came with pre installed 8.1, so I'm still discovering some of the differences. Really stupid move by Microsoft.

Appreciate your help.

Your welcome, overall though Win 8.1 is a much better performer and stable. MS can't please everyone.
