New Windows8 64bit Install > No Image on Laptop Screen

Upon restarting my system after doing the standard mass of Windows 8 updates, I came across a strange blank/black screen (after seeing the Bios/w8 splash). I assumed it was stuck, so pressed the power off button and the laptop turned off. After rebooting the laptop loads up normally to the desktop.

However the next time I restart I get the same black screen. I plugged in an external monitor on HDMI and it displays the desktop on there, ignoring the inbuilt laptop monitor.

This is what the black screen looks like (lights off for clarity):

cdOcN.jpg

If I shut down and leave it for a few minutes, then turn it on, it goes past the Windows 8 splash and logs in, then shows the desktop fine.

I have installed all the Windows Updates and all the drivers I could find from both Medion and Intel.

Please can someone help? I've searched the internet but struggle to understand the seemingly random fixes that are suggested! :(

Also check to make sure you have the correct display drivers. It is possible that Windows does not have the correct ones in its repository, so you have to still install them.

Make sure your laptop isn't set to external monitor. When it boots, it will show the splash screen on the built-in hardware. When Windows comes up, depending on the configuration, it can change to the external setting even if one is not connected (shouldn't, but could). If you have an external connected, just turn it on and change your settings there. If not, find the hardware toggle for your laptop on the keyboard. if that doesn't work, press the Win + P key. Use the arrow key to press up once and see if it switches to your laptop's display. Try it again.

Of course, if you get to the Desktop like you did before, just right click on it and check your screen resolution/display properties.

Today I turned the laptop on to see the black screen again. I plugged in the monitor via HDMI and the desktop (taskbar, start window and icons appeared on the external monitor, the mouse cannot go left to the laptop monitor, it is now turned off when the external monitor is being used.

Here are the settings:

Thanks, just sent them an email with the situation and a request for a BIOS update.

Press the Windows Logo Key and the P key, then see if you can select PC Only from the list. Another option is to look at the F keys on the keyboard, usually there is one to switch from the internal display to an external display, just look at the symbols or check your manual. You may have to press the Fn key and that key for it to toggle.

If Fast Startup is turned on, turn it off and see what happens. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-8-a.html Maybe its going into a sleep mode but not waking up correctly. The second startup may be a cold start that works.

Thanks - just tried this and no luck.

Also check to make sure you have the correct display drivers. It is possible that Windows does not have the correct ones in its repository, so you have to still install them.

I have tried both the latest driver from Intel (it's Intel HD 3000 graphics onboard), and also the older (now out of date) graphics driver from Medion (which is just an older version of the above). Same results for both.

A sure fire way of reaching the laptop monitor is:

Boot with external monitor
Shutdown via external monitor
Unplug external monitor
Boot to blank screen on laptop
Press Power Button on laptop (sends the laptop to Sleep)
Press Power Button and voila

If I do the above, then plug in the external monitor, and only send the laptop to sleep, rather than Shut Down, when it loads up with the account locked, I click once and it's all set up fine on both monitors fyi.

Ok, so I just shut down fully, then turned back on (with external monitor plugged in). It booted on the laptop monitor until the user log-in splash came up which was now only on the external monitor.

If I then do Fn + F8 which looks to be the monitor switch, the external monitor goes off for a second but then comes back with the desktop as before, nothing shows on the laptop screen.

If I do Windows Button + P I get this pop up on the side:

cema7.png

Clicking the 2nd and 3rd options seems to do nothing. I just clicked 'Second Screen Only' and after the external monitor turned off for a minute, it came back on saying 'We couldn't find another screen to connect to'.

If you have system restore enabled I'd try restoring to a date before this happened. If that fixes it, do the windows updates one at a time, if you think that's what did it, until you find the update that's breaking it. Then uninstall that update.

Thanks - how do I uninstall individual updates? I might be able to go back and look at installed updates to find the one that did it, more easily than individually installing 181 updates that took forever the first time around :p

Go to control panel > Programs and Features > View installed updates. Click the one you want to uninstall so its high lighted, and then click "Uninstall" at the top of the list.

EDIT: I didn't realize it was 180 + I was thinking it was just the last batch from the last patch Tuesday.

Hi azocarbo,

I am having exact the problem. Did you solve it in the meantime?

Nope, I had to put up with it! I've since bought a new desktop PC and this laptop is unused in the cupboard. Sorry and good luck!

Thank you for your reply.
I will contact Medion tomorrow.
By the way I am running Windows 10 on the Medion computer now. The problem is the same as in Windows 8.1

Hi,

I don’t know if still have your interest now you have put your Medion in the cupboard.
To fix the blank screen I upgraded the BIOS from version 202 to the newest version 301.

Now the logon screen appears as it should.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem on an E6221 but am struggling with the BIOS upgrade, where did you get version 311 as I may be picking the wrong version (3.02) for this laptop?
