PC just FORCED Windows 8.1. Now What?

I've had a Windows 8 PC for some time now. Everything works fine on it. I get the nag to upgrade to 8.1 every now and then, but I always dismiss it. Today, when I woke up the computer, it told me the update was ready but I had to reboot. My only choice was to postpone the reboot. I didn't really want to update it because, as I said, it was working fine. It gets along with my home network, etc. I went ahead and told it to "reboot now" since any other option was just putting off the inevitable.

It's at 78% setting up now. What can I expect?

My concern is that I also have a laptop that I use more often that also only has Windows 8. I get the nag to upgrade on it as well. I'm concerned I'm going to turn it on one morning and be forced to upgrade it as well.

If Windows Update started the download and install then the required previous updates had been done, shouldn't be a big problem. I've done a Desktop and a Notebook without issues.

By the way, I think there was something about the Update to 8.1 would be automatically pushed if one hadn't gotten it yet.

It has been awhile since I saw something about it being pushed but CRS is at work sometimes. There were a few prerequisite updates and some problems with one but seems the bugs have been worked out.

The 8.1 update caused some of my programs not to run and they had to be reinstalled. I don't remember which ones now as it was too long ago and I didn't keep a record.

I have seen a couple of posts about 8.1 being pushed. Maybe Microsoft is getting their ducks in a row for Windows 10, which was probably at one time called Windows 8.2.... :zip:

I couldn't find anything about a forced 8-->8.1 push. I only see stuff about those that have 8.1 having to accept a certain update.

And that's only on eightforums...

If you have Automatic Updates on, then Microsoft assumes that you accept everything it recommends. The upgrade to 8.1 is recommended. Period.

If you do want more control on what updates your PC downloads, then disable Automatic Updates and do the process manually. A simple click on "More info" for each update gives you all the information you need, there's nothing hidden.
