My external 3T disk runs fine on Windows 7.

When I connected (first time) to my Windows 8.1 desktop (EFI/EUFI BIOS) it detects the drive but gets parameter incorrect msg. In the System eventlog there were many entries with error Event ID 51. Windows didn't stop trying to access the disk.

PC has Asus Z97 Pro MB. The disk has just 1 big data partition. I have no clue.

Since you were running Windows 7, possibly the drive was set up using the Legacy (MBR) configuration and some software was used to make all 3 TB accessible. If you did not do that, possibly the drive came configured using software to make it all accessible.

If this is the situation, is there any way for you to save your date and convert the drive to GPT, or reinstall the software originally used to make it accessible? On a large drive, only 2.2 GB is accessible using the Legacy configuration unless something is used to make it accessible.

It is a paging problem and has nothing to do with the disk according to the info i've read.

The eventlog shows:

Event ID 51 (a lot)
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR10 during a paging operation

Event ID 140 ntfs (Microsoft-Windows-ntfs)
The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: Volume:, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume16.
({Device does not exist})

The device is detected. However clicking the device in explorer it starts scanning (green bar) or some occasions it returns filestructure and if lucky yo can click a file. But in most cases accessing the disc it will drop from explorer and tou have to click "This PC" again....this goes on and on....

There are not many hits with Google, some mentioned: "It's an 8.1 driver error with ASmedia USB 3 controllers".
To be certain i will download driver...

I did repair of the driver and after reboot I was able to watch a movie from the disc....7 seconds . The the disk disappeared. Same phenomenom a lot of ID 51's and 140's (some).

My 2T Adata Nobility NH03 functions as expected.

Still I think it's not a disk fault...

The properties of the disk displays Partion Style: GUID PT (GPT) and unallocated space 1M. However the MSR (MS Reserved Partition) is 0. I think you have to have a MSR partition.

I have used this disk to backup a laptop running Windows 8.1 with UEFI Bios and it never complained. I will check the disk with the laptop again later this week. Laptop is not at my place.

Just found out:
The usb is configured with lagecy support enabled. The xHCI controler mode is set to smart auto. The xHCI controler handles usb3. The old EHCI controler handled usb 1,2 en 3. I did change usb ports but just the usb3 ports. Moved the disk to a usb2 port and all works fine. No problems anymore. However this my is BU disk and backing up os and all data takes so looong.

Not sure if this is a bug. One could say if it works for usb2 it should work for usb3 too. In other words it should be compatible,

You don't need to have an MSR partition on a Data Drive.

You never say if the external drive is a USB 3.0 device. But on the Z97, I assume there may be more than one USB 3.0 controller, and drivers have to be loaded for all, or do not use that controller's ports for 3.0.

USB 3.0 drivers are loaded on top of the basic USB 2.0 drivers, which are normally in the chipset.

Are you sure the drive was not set up using some special software to allow access to the full 3 TB?

You might attach a picture of your Disk Management window. Use the paperclip on the advanced replies to attach.

Some folks have always had problems with Windows 8 USB 3.0 drivers. For some reason, I never have. The attachment is from a Z77 running Windows 10.

You don't need to have an MSR partition on a Data Drive.
When you initialize a GPT HD, there's always be an unallocated 128 MSR partition whether it's a system disk or a data disk. Disk management will not show this partition. However, if you use a partition manager software or Macrium Reflect backup software, it will show this partition at the beginning of the GPT disk for data disk.

Have you installed the latest Intel Chipset driver ? If not, try to download and install it from Intel Website. The latest version is 10.0.13.
Normally, when you install Windows, MS will use its generic drivers to get Windows up and running, after installation, you might want to update those drivers to get full functionality of the MB built in devices as shown in the Northbridge & Southbridge hubs

The MSR partition is only added if you convert the drive from within Windows, even using the command prompt, and the MSR partition is placed at a 17K offset. I am not saying you definitely even need it on a primary drive, it depends if something on your system needs it.

If you boot to Recovery or Install Media, such as during an install, you can convert the drive without the MSR partition being added. But it should not be involved in the current situation.

No I didn't use special software. The disk structure was preinstalled with GPT.

The system is 5 days old and running on MB Z97 pro

I've attached images of Diskpart, Diskmgmt and the USB Bus Controlers

It appears you have not yet loaded the Chipset drivers for the system. You might think about doing that and perhaps reload the specific USB 3.0 drivers. We do not know for sure the lack of drivers is causing the problem, but the newer the motherboard, the less likely Windows has a good driver for it.

Are you using any of the special USB utilities, such as the Boost or the USB charging utility?

I am attaching the listing for my Z87-Expert motherboard in Windows 10 for you to compare. One thing I look for in an install are references to the exact chipset on that system.... This includes things like System Devices and SATA controllers.

Installed the latest Chipset driver 10.0.14. I didn't use the USB charging. I did install USB Boost.
When trying the disk with usb3 I got 2 BSOD's. Didn't surprise me. I had problems uninstalling Asus Ai Suite 3. Took some time, but finally I used Revo to get rid of it. (Uninstalled USB Boost as well)
Also the EventView starts freezing when I click an entry of trhe list. I went back to previous restore point, but still happens. Issued a FSC /scannow, but it finished clean.

The USB3 controllers are not developed by Intel but just Microsoft.

Found an answer concerning the usb controlers from an Intel representative:

Intel only offers drivers for USB 3.0 under Windows 7, I regret to inform you that Intel does not have plans to develop USB 3.0 drivers for Win8. The drivers are provided by Microsoft.
In regards to USB 2.0 is the same thing as USB 3.0 drivers, they are part of the operating system. I recommend checking with Asus for more information.

Attachment shows my current USB controlers.

I wasn't referring to any drivers from Intel. The drivers from ASUS are the only ones I use and they have 8.1 chipset drivers.

The AI Suite has caused problems in the past under certain conditions. Uninstalling it using something other than the ASUS uninstaller, may be involved in the current problems.

If you are getting BSODs, attach the dump file if you have your system set up to use the small dump file option. Hard to say if these problems might be caused by some drivers you loaded, which I doubt, or the uninstall process.

One more thing, I notice you have two Mass Storage Devices. Are you using another external device?

Because of your question, I just discovered Asus has released an X99 motherboard ... :)

Sorry for this very very late reply.
I had decided to copy 3TB from external to the new desktop. To make a choice I reviewed prices and best harddrive reports. The 2TB Hitachi Ultradesk 7F4000 had good reports and MTBF is very low. So I bought two (internals) to copy the 3TB external data to. They came as GPT disk with 128MB Reserved partition. Didn't delete the reserved partition (Maybe I will). The 3TB external came also with a reserved partition. Difference besides the size is the offset the Hitachi 17KB and 3TB ext 24KB.

I can't recall why but I connected the 3TB external to USB3 in backpannel and surprice surprice I had no problem.
It turned out I have two different controllers for the USB3 ports. Asmedia xHCI and Intel xHCI controllers.
My 3TB was connected to the USB3 with the Asmedia controller. The USB3 with Intel xHCI had still errors, tries to read the disk and disconnects the disk. Then it starts all over again....detecting disk etc etc.

Loaded latest Asmedia drivers (Ver 1.16.15.0), Intel chipset (Ver 1.0.0.14) and BIOS (Ver 2012). Didn't change behaviour.

Maybe someone has an idea what caused this phenomenom. Will do a "fresh" GPT style setup of the 3TB external shortly (want to see it working on all USB ports), because the USB3 with Intel xHCI is more then 2X faster then the USB3 with Asmedia. The test was not exact, but gives me an impression of the difference in speed between the two.
