How to create new folder in "File Explorer"?

Hello,

I just got a new Windows 8.1 laptop, and went to File Explorer, and I see there 6 folders (desktop, downloads, music, documents, pictures, videos). under that I see my drive letters (C: and E:) and under that the network locations.

I try to create new folder at the area of the 6 folders, like I was able in Windows 7, but when I right-click with mouse in that area of the 6 folders, I just don't get the option to create a new folder.

Is there a way to open File Explorer like the old fashion way of Windows 7 and just create folders there?

Thanks

Hello mibaup,

By default, you cannot create new folders in "This PC" since it's not an actual folder. You would need to open a folder first, then you will be able to create a new folder as usual. :)

So there is no more "My documents"? I mean, where am I supposed to create the new folder? On desktop? Or maybe inside one of the 6 folders that already exist in "This PC"?

As stated above, Windows will not allow you to create folders in "This PC" . However, You can use a third party program:
Optimize, tweak, clean, speed up and repair Windows 8 - Windows 8 Manager
then you can create anything under This PC. In the screenshot below, I created 2 folders, 2 System Items, an add Photoshop to This PC:

And without a 3rd party option? Is there a way to see more folders near the 6 existing folders? (Or maybe I have to create for example a folder inside "Documents" and so on?

If you are good with registry. You can manually create it but it is a tedious process.
First you need to create a Unique CLSID under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\ then setup all the options for it.
You also have to add this CLSID to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace

For 64 bit Windows you will also add to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace

Here's an example to add a folder, where I set to "D:\My Own Stuff":
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\[COLOR=#b22222]{00000000-0000-0000-0000-123456733947}[/COLOR]]
@="Windows 8 BG"
"InfoTip"="[COLOR=#b22222]D:\\My Own Stuff[/COLOR]"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00000000-0000-0000-0000-123456733947}\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\Windows\\system32\\imageres.dll,3"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00000000-0000-0000-0000-123456733947}\InProcServer32]

If you wish, you can use this template that I set to create a folder called System32 in "This PC" then Modify 3 places in the registry as shown in the screen shot.

IMPORTANT: Make a backup of the registry before you try it.

Unzip the Attachement then double click to merge into the registry.

a.png

b.png

On the first screen, The name of the Folder is set to: System32
InfoTip is set to: C:\Windows\System32

On the 2nd screen, The target is actually the folder: C:\Windows\System32 that you want to Open.

Just Modify these 3 items then you should have a folder in "This PC"

To create additional folder: you can use the same template but globally add 1 to the CLSID in AddClass.reg and in 32.reg.
Fore example the current CLSID: {00000000-0000-0000-0000-123456748807}
then Use: {00000000-0000-0000-0000-123456748808} for the next folder
Merge again into registry and modify the 3 items again as needed.

Thank you very much :)! But I think I'll just stick to creating folders inside the main folders without messing with registry
Maybe in Windows 10 it will change.. Btw, Is Windows 10 going to be an update for Windows 8.1 just like 8.1 was an update for 8?

Windows 10 will be separate, but there's a rumor that Windows 8 owners may get a free upgrade to Windows 10.
