    Windows 8.1 Version Information

This may have been answered and could be a very stupid question - I am completely lost trying to distinguish between:

    1. Windows 8.1 Core
    2. Windows 8.1 Core Single Language

As I don't see the word Core anywhere - Please have a look at the screenshot, could anyone kindly explain the difference as the generic install key is different for both

    Thanks in advance

hi , it doesn't show core because there are only 2 version sold to non business consumers, win8 and win8 pro , so if it doesn't say pro ,then it core .as for single language, it means just that ,to have more language options you would have to install the language pack ,like in the link below.hope this helps a bit ,

Thanks caperjack in other words what you are saying they are one and the same thing? Then why there are two different generic install keys?

Right. The two would be identical except for the number of languages you could switch between without an additional download. The single language would be useful for very low end devices where there's very little storage and you want to cut the size of the OS footprint as much as possible.

I do understand this, however, what bothers most is
I don't see the word Core anywhere
    when winver command is used

Yes, it is confusing. If it says nothing, it is Core.

If it was Core Single Language, or Pro, then it would tell you.

Sorry about all the fuss, so it's safe to infer that I've Windows 8x CORE Single Language

There are couple of more questions and I request learned members to please help I also admit that I am being paranoid here - only because don't want to get stuck in endless loop of activation

To make long story short, this laptop came pre-installed Windows 8 Single Language that I upgraded to 8.x through Store. Now I want to go for a clean install, I've installation media from following two .iso

    • en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso (it was recommended to someone else at HP forum)
      CRC32: A5889F86
      MD5: 0E8F2199FAE18FE510C23426E68F675A
      SHA-1: 1CE53AD5F60419CF04A715CF3233F247E48BEEC4

    • IR3_CSLA_X64FRER_en-US_DV9.iso (I read about encrypted .esd file in this forum)
      CRC32: 52202136
      MD5: 3DB8CEEC032B1A16564E63C9CB85C996
      SHA-1: D1DBC605017FE1603D3C553A31656D409FF7C40E

    1. How do I check their integrity as I don't have access to MSDN/TechNet?
    2. Which one should I opt 8 or updated 8x?

    Thank you

I have Windows 8.1. I bought my Windows 8.1 in Mexico so the system is in Spanish. I changed my system language to English without any problem. When I click on "Add a Language" I get dozens of languages starting with Afrikaans and ending at Yoruba.

I am running Windows 8.1 and can order a key for Windows 8.1 Pro Pack if I want for another $1,820 pesos.

From what I have read Core and Core Single Language are two different SKU's, they are two different ISO images and the keys are not interchangeable. A Core key will not work for the Single Language edition, and a Single Language key will not work for the normal Core edition. As already mentioned, if it doesn't say 8.x Pro its Core. How you tell if it's single language I don't know. My two laptops came with 8 Core preinstalled. They were not single language. Likely because you have the option of English or French language during the OBBE first time setup.
