How do I recover the desktop from my other laptop?

So, my work laptop just crashed. I have a second one that Im on now. I notice when I log in here, the lock screen and desktop image are the same as what was on my other laptop. It's under the same windows account.

Ive been looking online and apparently it's possible to recover files from that computer onto this one. I try doing this and all of the information is for other windows versions. Im on 8.1 (same as my other crashed laptop). I know I should have backed my files up myself onto an external drive, but could someone help me figure out how to restore these files? They must be backed up someplace, right? After all how did windows transfer the custom lock screen image and desktop image without being asked to? Doesn't this point to the possibility that the files I saved to my other desktop are someplace I can recover them from?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

The files on you old Desktop, usually shortcuts, will be located at C:\Users\YOUR_NAME_HERE\Desktop along with other things. And No, they are not backed up unless you did it at some time or have a program installed to do the backup.
