shutdown/restart is minutes - unless I pull network cable

Just installed windows 8 on a computer I built some years back, it's an ECS PT890T-A mainboard, which has built in network support. Device manager says it's a VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter.

Shutdown or restart will hang for a few minutes. However, if I unplug (pull the network cable) then shutdown or restart will go fast, about 10-15 seconds. If I leave it plugged in and then while it's trying to shut or restart pull it out it will shut or restart in a few seconds, so it appears this device is what's hanging it up.

It says the driver is up to date and is the best one.

Anyone else have this problem and/or find a fix?

Found it! It's windows update trying to phone home. I set it to no automatic updates and that fixed it.

This is a media computer I put together to sit next to my tv, without a mouse or keyboard. I configure it remotely. I only access it on my local lan.

I found it by using a sniffer on it (my smart switch finally paid off) and saw that during shutdown it was trying to contact windows update - actually it only got as far as doing a DNS lookup, which my router ignored as this machine is forbidden to access the internet - much safer that way.

I'm not much of a VM expert. I have a couple of win7 systems running a WinXP VM that I installed manually, in all those cases, the virtual network has always just booted up and worked. Under Win8 Pro-RTM, I did a XP VM that I loaded myself (versus an XP mode) and it loads the virtual network...
I apologize if there is already a solution to this issue that I missed. I know very little about computers and was only more confused reading through past posts. My computer goes to bsod every 30 minutes or so after every restart. The bsod simply says "system_service_exception". It doesn't have...
Yesterday I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 on my Dell XPS desktop (i7-3770, 8 GB RAM). Now, when I shutdown, sleep, or hibernate, it takes over 2 minutes for the unit to do what used to take very little time. I reinstalled the video driver (both latest and two most recent version) and each...
Solved Network Cable Is [NOT] Unplugged in Network & Sharing
Hello everyone! I re-installed Windows 8 yesterday evening (thought it would be quicker than to cleanup and fix my old install) and then directly upgraded it to Windows 8.1. The problem I am experiencing is quite weird: The Operating System doesn't detect the network cable. 33459 It is quite...
This won't be specific to Windows8 but it will apply there just the same I guess; N.b.: I got myself a Belkin Windows8 Transfer cable (F4U060), which sure doesn't do my job out of the box. Still, solutions for what I want may exist. I like to setup a WIRED PAN over USB. Googled my life out of...
