Solved Windows 8 upgrade

Hi All

We went out today for 6 hours and left our HP laptop on idle.

When we got home it had shut down. On start up we were presented with the usual Windows upgrade message. It is set up for automatic upgrades. Obviously it had shut down as part of the upgrade.

We then found that all our files were missing. Photos, music and some business records. Luckily a lot were backed up on an external hdd but we still lost quite a few as my wife was downloading photos earlier and working on some music files.

Contacted MS and all they wanted to do was sell me some stuff.

As far as I am concerned this is an issue caused by MS. I will call their office in the morning.

In the meantime, anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Obviously the update was performed hence the files were erased in doing so.
You may try to use Recuva Free from Piniform to try to find some of those files, but it will take a while.
https://www.piriform.com/recuva/download

You are still better off though win Win 8.1 update 1

I think you are using the wrong word/term ,updates don't delete personal files and upgrades don't run automatic ,at least not on any computer I own ,and I haven't seen anywhere to set a win8 upgrade to automatic

Sorry for the confusion, I was not referring to Win 8 but some other program may have an automated process that update.

Post a screen capture of File Explorer with C:\Users expanded. Should look something like this:

Users.jpg

I want to see if your original User Account is still there and for some reason Windows started with a new account. If so then all your data is still there.

Hi all. So. How embarrassing. Seems I have two log on profiles. Somehow my wife accessed this second profile under a slightly different profile name. I saw the name of the profile when logging on this morning and thought that's not correct. Found my usual profile, logged on and up pops my usual desktop. All files in place. Apologies for the post. Thanks very much for trying to help. Now heading for the door with a very red face!
