cant move/extend gpt partition with win8 installed "left"

    Hi All,

To make a long story short I have a win8 system on a SSD with about 200gb free on the left of the C: partition (left over from previous OS I dual booted). The ssd is gpt partitioned and boots using EFI.

I tried moving the partition to the left using Gparted which worked but windows wouldnt boot. I tried recreating the bcd files with no success. After doing some research I was lead to believe it was due to keys under HKLM\System\MountedDevices having the partition offset hardcoded as it would start to boot windows then crash with an error saying boot device inaccessible.

I got it booting again by moving the partition back to the correct position and recreating the bcd files again.

So are there any guides or tools that can move the partition to the left and update the relevant areas of windows so that it can boot? Or extend the partition to the left without breaking it?

    cheers

It would help if you post a screen shot from the disk management.

I think if I was going to move a partition, knowing how dangerous it can be, I would use a utility for Windows.

How did you start GParted and what version was it?

    Hi All,

Thanks for the responses. My google-fu is weak, I didn't find those useful posts you linked theog when I searched.

I will have a look at the paragon apps you mentioned. I have included a screenshot of disk management below.

Here's the link that I helped on how to swap/move partitions:

If Windows does not boot, just boot up the Macrium Rescue disk. On the bottom left, there's an icon for Command Prompt, open then type: bcdboot c:\windows then reboot your PC.

I was dual booting with Windows 7 and I deleted that partition. It is to my understanding that I would need to move the Windows 8 partition to the left before extending it. Do I need to use a CD, or can I do it from a program? Thank you.
