Just installed Windows 8.1. Does anything work on this OS

Just finished installing Windows 8 and then upgraded to 8.1 and after first adding a start menu and then searching all over to find out how to get rid of things like the library etc. I was on to personalization (another joke).

So now it looks as good as I can get it I am on to installing my applications, but I have one major issue that is causing problems with this. When I double click on my network icon to see my other computers it only shows my printers and when I am installing something and I need to access the network I see nothing and have to abort the install. The funny thing with this is if I open it from the run box \\otherpc it will work.

So I decided to continue on install other apps and got to Winrar. It installs with no errors but I don't have a context menu in Windows Explorer. Have tried to set this up within the program to no avail.

So I have decided to put any installing on hold in case I just need to go back to Win7. Anyone have any ideas on the above issues.

    Much thanks

I'd suspect the changes you made to "get rid of things like the library etc..." are the culprit. Either that or your install didn't go right.

Did you by any chance create a restore point or a system image after the install but before you started customizing?

My Win 8.1 machines have no trouble seeing the older machines on my network so I can assure you that it isn't a bug in Win 8.x causing your issue. Win 8.x has been very stable and trouble free for me.

If you don't have a way to do a system restore then I would try opening a command prompt and running the command "sfc /scannow" to check the integrity of your system files.

OK, so I reinstalled Windows 8 from scratch and installed 106 Windows updates. This is all I have done, no reg edits or hacks or anything else and I still have the same issue.

If I double click on the network icon on my desktop or click on the network icon in Windows Explorer or try to navigate to a network share from within an program I don't see my other computer (I only have one). If I go to run command and type \\otherpc it will open my shares in Windows Explorer. Just tried and I can't map a network drive either - does not see it.

Note that I can see this computer from my Windows 7 computer no problem and both computers have the same username and same password and are in the same workgroup.

Looking more and more like a Windows 8 issue. Haven't updated to 8.1 yet.

    Any other ideas.

Oh, I also ran sfc /scannow but have no idea what any of it means. Very long files.

    Thanks

You will want to run--- Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    Then run sfc /scannow

    Reboot then.

While you have the administrator cmd prompts open & finished, could you take a FULL screenshot of them like this---

    & post it/them ?

    Hi there

Upgrade again now to W10 --it's got the Start menu and everything seems to work just fine judging by the feedback on W10 forum. It's valid until Apr 2015 and it's almost more Windows 7 than windows 7 itself with a far superior performance.

    Cheers
