No idea. My current laptop has two, my last had one on the RHS. I wouldn't worry about it - if there was a fundamental flaw in placing of fans presumably the makers would have noticed. It is their job after all.
Any laptop it is very important to keep the fan(s) and exhaust port cooling fins clean, no matter the position. Don't lay on blanket, pillow or other soft object while using as they will block the fan air inlet.

From my experience with laptops when the fan is on the far right it probably means the harddrive is on the far left. There will be higher temperatures than over time for that drive. Because of the increased heat/inbalanced sides the fan will get dirtier more often and it may even overheat your system. I have had laptops with a fan on one side that could get up to over a 100 degrees!

can hit 2.7ghz with turbo boost apparently, 1.7ghz is pretty slow isn't it?

1.7ghz is pretty slow for AMD. From a general standpoint the ghz is a little higher for "good" ghz for AMD versus Intel.

To give an example 3.7-4.2ghz is "good to best" for AMD. While Intel their 3.2-.3.5ghz is "good to best" more times than none. ( Unless we start going into 12mb + cache but we won't even start that topic )

The fan will be where the processor is, or in close proximity to it. It's primary function is to cool the processor when under load. I don't think it matters where it is as long as there is good airflow in and out. I use a laptop tray when I don't have a hard flat surface to put my laptop on. It's padded on the underside so its comfortable in my lap. The top is rigid and flat and allows airflow under the laptop.

I have an ASUS and an Acer laptop. My Wife uses the Acer, it has a 15 inch screen, is nice and thin and light. It's a V5 something, AMD A-8 APU. My ASUS is a K75DE, 17.3 inch screen, dual drive bays, AMD A-10 APU. It's big and a bit heavy, but its what I wanted.

Apparently the intel boost hits 2.7ghz when does the boost kick in?

Basically when the OS asks and the CPU is not overheated. It is only a temporary boost - it will not run continuously. Intel® Turbo Boost Technology 2.0

2.7ghz would be the manufacturer "suggested" stopping point for overclocking I take it.

I have a few computers at home that are intel based and that run in the 2.0-3.0 ghz area and they are decent.

I would be more worried about the processor and if it's a knock off fan more so than the ghz.

So this laptop seems pretty slow until it hits the boost. I'm disappointed by that. I thought 1.7ghz was decent.
