Issues since upgrading to windows 8.1

All seemed fine for a day or so, may be coincidence but now audio gone and trouble shooter won't fix, cannot open 'settings' cannot open 'control panel' and cannot open 'windows updates' .

Any advice appreciated - not that great with the technical side of things

Windows key + X and select Command Prompt (Admin) and type exactly:
sfc /scannow

This will take a while to run and fix any corrupt any system file errors.

What anti virus software are you using and did you do a full scan?

I am doing as you suggest - there is no change for 30 mins to the black screen since I have entered the command but I will stick with it

I have McAfee + AVG Tune up, both say all is fine . I also did a windows malicious tool scan and nothing came up.

Cannot open settings from right hand swipe menu, and when I try to open control panel just get a blank, cannot perform any windows update.

The black screen didn't do anything except for flashing cursor 4 hrs...

Did you type exactly sfc /scannow as I mentioned and press return or did you get an error message? If possible post a screenshot.

Yes did as you said exactly but just get the flashing cursor on the next line down once I have hit enter.

Saved screenshot to clipboard but it is not allowing me to open anything to forward onto this message - i cannot open any app.

I have resolved by using reimage thanks for your help anyway
