Solved How to remove wsappx task?

I noticed that wsappx is occasionally consuming non-trivial amounts of my CPU.

Searching the internet, I learn that wsappx is not necessary for operation of my PC. One user suggests killing it via task manager.

When I tried to end the task I got a scary warning along the lines of "may render Windows unusable" I probably did not record the message accurately, and wsappx seems to have (temporarily?) gone away on its own.

Any suggestions for disabling or uninstalling this task?

I wouldn't advice ending any process unless you know what you are doing and exactly what the process is; that being said, I would start with a full virus scan.

From what I can find around the web that process is related to the windows store and is a program that runs in the backgrounds to keep track of the apps you have installed. Have there been any problems with the store on your system recently?

wsappx is the Windows Store program - basically it's trawling your computer for all installed apps and telling Microsoft what programs you have, what versions etc.
Keep task manager on when you start your computer and kill it once it appears.
It will take two to three kills before it stops restarting itself.
Also, note that it will usually start automatically when you link to a wireless network - you will have to do the 2 or 3 kills again after connecting to the internet.

I don't have anything with wsappx in it anywhere on my Windows 8.1.1 Pro X64 system.

redlynch, I am not aware of any problems with my store.

I neglected to address your comment about virus scanning.

I regularly scan with three different virus scanners and have not found problems. I assume that this task is not an actual virus but rather an unnecessary (to me) Microsoft task.

A little bit of digging shows that wsappx is part of the Windows Store Service, mine is currently set to a manual trigger.

Provides infrastructure support for Windows Store. This service is started on demand and if disabled applications bought using Windows Store will not behave correctly.

When you look in your services under computer management is the service started manually or is it set to run at startup?

In Control Panel Administrative Tools Computer Management Services, I see this entry:

Windows Store Service (WSService) "Provides infrastructure..." [Status is blank] "Manual (Triffer Start)" "Local System"

So, it looks like I can disable it here.
