Help w/Windows 8.1 split screen @2560x1440

I'm using win 8.1 with a 2560 x1440 resolution, but I can't seem to get split screen to work. I've tried a few tutorials online, but without success.

I can easily split the screen by left mouse clicking the top of the screen and dragging down. The first window works normally with task bar showing on the bottom, but I can't figure out how to get anything else in the 2nd window that is created. One online tutorial mentioned something about executing a mouse-over on the left or upper left corner, but that doesn't bring anything up. I can get the search/share/start/devices/settings task bar to appear by mouse-overing the upper right hand corner, but this doesn't lead to filling the second window.

I feel I must be missing something obvious. Advice appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for all the help.

Here's what I was able to determine. I could get two windows to share the screen by windows key + arrow left and then doing windows key + arrow right on the other window, but that wouldn't actually mean two apps in two separate windows. (Same can be done but just dragging one window to left of screen then dragging another window to the right in the same manner)

However, my aim was to truly split the screen as can be indicated by the dark vertical bar with dots in it's center. For example, if you left click, drag down from the top of the desktop (no windows at all) you will create a split screen, but you will only be able to use one side of the screen as a proper desktop which can be easily identified as the only "screen" with its own taskbar. On the non-taskbar side you can put a metro or windows 8 app like Photos, or windows store or windows weather, but so far as I can tell, it cannot be used by other programs or applications that are running.

Anyway, just an FYI. I don't see a need to post further.

Splitting the screen is easy. So why is it so complicated to use he other half??.
Whoever thought this up must have had something easier in mind. Enough to make you want to throw the machine out of the window!
Why can't I open a window, reduce it, open another reduce it and manage them both side by side, as I did in Vista? Things were so much easier............but that was in the good old days...

This does not provide a solution to my problem.
Can someone tell me simply: WHAT BASIC PURPOSE DOES THE SPLIT SCREEN CAPABILITY SERVE? - then I shall know whether I am trying to achieve the impossible.
