Pictures on external storage drive are rotated

I've connected a MyBook 256GB external storage drive to my newly built computer. Half of my pictures are all rotated to the right. How did this happen? The pictures weren't taken in the way they appear right now. There has to be a better way of fixing this than to select the ones which are rotated and rotate them back to the original position.

As thumbnails or in a picture viewer ? Think it's something between a portrait and landscape setting. Download these directly from a camera to this drive recently or always had them on this drive and they changed now ?

Some of the thumbnails are rotated to the right and others aren't. All thumbnails have been in the normal orientation on this drive until I connected it to my new computer.

They definitely stay when I rotate them back. I'll take a look at the link and see what I can find out.
