Windows 8.1 - issues with drivers (probably)

I haven't put this under driver, nor hardware section, because I just don't know what's wrong. I'm really losing my mind over this. Like, really losing my mind! I hope someone will be able to help me.

I have a new computer, everything was tested so there are no compatibility issues... or at least, there shouldn't be. So, here's the thing: I have original windows 8.1 installation, everything works perfectly. Except, when I do some GPU stuff, like watching VLC or playing games.

EACH and EVERY TIME I open VLC, I get an error, however, I don't notice anything, since VLC player doesn't shut down or freezes or anything. It works just OK, but when I check event log, here's the thing:

Faulting application name: vlc.exe, version: 2.1.5.0, time stamp: 0x00000000

The exactly same thing happens when I try to play e.g. Max Payne 3. However, when I play MP3, the following happens:

  • I can play Max Payne 3 for 10 minutes or up to 3 hours, when suddenly (and randomly) the image freezes
  • The game itself DOESN'T freeze; I hear background noise and I can press escape and hear the sound etc., but the image is still, frozen
  • I can actually quit the game (I click by memory) and it shuts down "gracefully".

Event log notes the following errors:

and

Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Sometimes even...

The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device SWD\SensorsAndLocationEnum\LPSensorSWDevice.

Here's what I've done:
  • installed the latest drivers for GPU (still same errors)
  • installed 1 year old drivers for GPU (still same errors)
  • ran chkdsk with no errors
  • stress-tested GPU, no errors
  • reinstalled windows 8.1
  • reinstalled the game and vlc
  • checked gpu stats, no overheating, everything in normal range

Update:
when I installed 32 bit VLC, it worked without any errors!
Why is the 64 bit VLC causing these problems? I know it's not the VLC's fault, because I installed it on a different computer and it worked OK.

Also, my motherboard graphic card is still active; it wasn't disabled when I added geforce 650 ti.

Did you install the latest Intel-GPU-Driver's as well ? : Click

Did you install any Codec's-Pack's ?

Try disabling the on-board graphics via BIOS.

Could on-board graphics really be causing all of this?

Update: yeah, my intel gpu drivers are up to date. I don't use any additional codec's pack's, VLC doesn't need that.

any ideas?

Did you try to disable the On-Board-GPU via BIOS ?

I keep mine disabled, as I don't need / want to use it.

I use VLC + Foobar2000 and know that they don't need any Codec's, but I still install the K-Lite Codec's for some other stuff.

I use VLC v2.1.5 (x86 + x64) under Windows-8.1-Pro-WMC-Update-1-x64 without any problems.

Try to pin-point what's different to the other PC, where you don't have any issues.

well that's kind of hard, since they're completely different computers, completely and totally different hardware.
However, the computer without vlc error has no additonal graphic card, than the one on-board.

Then I would disable it. You would only use it, if you really want to save some small amount of extra power, which is usually more important in a Laptop or Tablet, but not in a Desktop-PC, because a normal GPU doesn't use so much power in 2D / Desktop-Mode either.

Did you install something like that here ? : Click

Oh, I see. I could disable it, but what is the logic behind it? How could on-board GPU cause all these problems?
What exactly is the software you provided in the link? How should I use it, to what end?
Thanks again!

Info: Click

The On-Board-GPU is build-in your CPU (Intel HD4600) which uses Memory from your normal RAM (shared Memory): Click

So it uses unnecessary some of your normal RAM, because the HD-GPU doesn't come with a large amount of VRAM, like a normal GPU.

As the HD-GPU is build into the CPU, it creates unnecessary heat if you keep it enabled and uses resources as well.

If you overclock your CPU, then that's one of the things you want to disable to be able to push your overclock further, because your CPU will get less hot with the integrated GPU disabled.

well, well, well, this is interesting:
I formatted computer, wasn't connected to the web, so no updates from the web could be made, booted to windows, resolution was very low, because I didn't have any drivers installed at all, and then I installed VLC 64 bit from USB.
When I closed the VLC 64 bit, THE SAME ERROR APPEARED.

Obviously, the error has nothing to do with drivers, at all.
Perhaps the Windows 8.1 installation version is corrupted??

You are using the GeForce v335.23.

Did you try the latest ones: Click

Also some older Ti-GPU's were a bit unstable, which could be sometimes fixed by increasing the GPU-Voltages or by reducing the Clock-Speeds a bit.

And you still didn't get back to me, if disabling the HD-GPU solved the issue.

It would be also helpful, even if only for the future, if you would fill-out the System-Specs-Part of your profile.

No, it did not. Still the same error :/
I have now the latest drivers. However, VLC crashed even before ANY drivers AT ALL. Clean install with no drivers, VLC produced the SAME error :/

Can you take-out / unplug your 650-Ti and connect your Screen to the On-Board-GPU, to see if maybe the 650 is causing the issues ?

OK will do, when I get home. However, would 650 Ti produce this error on 64 bit VLC, and NOT on 32 bit VLC?

Hard to tell, as it's quite unusual to have that problem at all, at least after a fresh install of your OS.

I checked your .dll-Version-Number's and they are the same than mine.

It could be even something simple like a faulty RAM-Stick.

Maybe give Memtest a go.

You could have a read here, but that seems to be related to a different kind of problem.

Did you use an untouched MSDN-ISO ?

:)
