Windows 8.1 Flashing Cursor at login, can't restore

Hi everyone. I made my first custom pc about a month ago and today I started having issues with the wireless card. I restarted to see if I could fix it and when I booted back up I got a black screen with a flashing cursor and an unplugged Ethernet sign (the one that displays on the network screen.)

I have tried to restore from a restore point I made on the 13th but at the very end when it says 'finalizing restore' it gives an error saying there is a write protected file from an antivirus program? I booted up in safe mode and disabled all antivirus stuff I could find and it still gives the error.

I have no third party antivirus programs installed, just windows defender. What should I do? Can I restore without loosing data? If I reinstall will my activation code be invalid from 2 installs? I can't load the windows 8 installer in safe mode, I open it and it never does anything, like it needs to be in normal mode. That's the only way I know of to 'upgrade' windows so I don't loose data.

Hi, I would recommend attempting to go back to the furthest restore point possible. If that doesn't work try using the repair windows tool to reset your pc. Then if that doesn't work you can contact the windows helpdesk or try and remove the network card + reinstall windows. Then install the drivers and try again! Let me know how you get on!

Unfortunately I could not find a solution and eventually had to reinstall windows. Even after booting into safe mode and removing the wireless drivers I could still not boot, and when trying to restore I got an error saying there were write protected files that could not be overridden.

I was able to copy the files I needed to keep in safe mode onto a flashdrive, so if anyone else is experiencing this problem and doesn't want to loose such files, you can save them that way.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful..
