I have added necessary reg changes to my previous post.

I am not sure it will work straight off.

I think you need to apply the install.wim to a vhd - make the reg changes, do bcdboot - put the vhd on a usb stick.

Deploying Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 on USB Flash Drive

    BootDriverFlags

    PollBootPartitionTimeout

    I forgot to mention:

    reg.exe add "HKLM\SYS\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" /v PagingFiles /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "" /f

    Interesting

Hope this will work, or you'll still get a bsod like jimbo (win7 seems to fail at some drivers, win8 is more portable designed)

You shouldn't get a bsod if you allow enough time - check the entry for windows 8 this is it:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYS\ControlSet001\Control\PnP]
    "PollBootPartitionTimeout"=dword:00007530

Decimal value is 30000 - same as I posted earlier.

The MS article says 15000 but use 30000 because that is what win8 uses - should be plenty of time.

    Great discovery!

How do we add this with: reg.exe add ... correctly?

    Thanks

The /f ALL parameters do not exist in Win7. Use: bcdboot d:\windows /s d:

Yes - that is already at the ms link posted previously

@Hopachi - follow the steps at ms link and at step 6 do the extra couple of registry changes

    reg.exe add HKLM\SYS\ControlSet001\PnP /f /v PollBootPartitionTimeout /t REG_DWORD /d 30000

    reg.exe add HKLM\SYS\ControlSet001 /f /v BootDriverFlags /t REG_DWORD /d 0x6

    reg.exe add "HKLM\SYS\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" /v PagingFiles /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "" /f

That assumes you have named the loaded system hive "SYS" If you have named the loaded system hive the same as in the MS post - that will be "HyperVtemp"

    Thanks a lot SIW2

Without these commands we wouldn't achieve much, I guess.

You can install Windows 7 on a flash drive, but not the Windows 8 To Go style. Windows 7 has limitations that 8 doesn't.

The method I used was with the VHD on the USB drive and using EasyBCD to install the boot loader, the MBR and the such. The only thing you CANNOT do, and SHOULD NOT do, is install Windows 7 updates. You can install Office updates, but not 7. I tried that and when I rebooted, I sat there face to face with a BSOD.

Windows 7 runs perfectly fine, just like Windows 8 on a USB 2.0 flash drive.
