Windows start up runs on and on

Win 8.1 x64 Pro. Paper fell down behind my desk and while getting it my hand touched a power cord, the result being when I came back up the screen was frozen. I shut down by the computer button, waited, restarted and the Windows blue four rectangle image comes up and the dotted circle continues to rotate, but can't get past it. No shut down error message, as I would have expected. Repeated the process twice just to be sure. What is the best way to approach this? I do have a Win 8 original disk if needed and there are recent sys restores and a system disk image on another internal HDD. Thanks,

Update: On the fourth try, after a bit a message has come up, "Scanning and repairing drive (K)." It's gotten to 7% complete but seems stuck there. Since Windows drive labeling and user labeling are often different, not sure what drive it's working on.

Apparently one of your HD's got corrupted due to sudden loss of power while it's performing some read/write IO. Chkdsk will take a while to complete so just be patient and wait.

It got to 8% in the two hours I was gone. Before I saw your post on my laptop, I rebooted, walked away and an hour later it had booted to the desktop. Not much worked, but another boot and it did. Running Windows 8 Mgr now. Thanks for your help.

It's doing the same thing this morning on cold boot, currently at 8%. Last night I ran Yamicsoft Windows 8 Manager repair, both the general one and the scannow one, with reboots, and everything seemed ok. But here it is again. The system drive is a Plextor SSD. Any ideas? Thanks,

Download CrystalDiskInfo.V6.2.0 and have a look at the status of all drives in your PC then we can go from there.

Eventually a help I assume (Plextor also has its own utilities if I can get to the desktop, which is the problem right now. When I reboot (after waiting an hour or two), there are three different things that happen, seemingly rotating among them: 1) the Windows insignia is there and the circle dots run on and on; 2) after a bit the scan and repair message comes up (see above); and 3) the insignia come up, then soon a Preparing Automatic Repair message, followed after 30-60 seconds by the screen going blank (black). What's the latter about? Is any of those preferable? I'm going to be out for the afternoon soon, so will let it run for several hours and see what happens. Btw, in the startup process, it does get past the point where the keyboard lights flash.

Five plus hours later and it's still at 8% (seems to start at 7%).

In your initial post, you said it was checking on drive K:. If so then I would suggest to unplug all HD's except the Boot SSD to see if you can boot into Windows with only the SSD connected.

Tested HDDs one by one and found a bad one. Fortunately still on warranty. What I'm curious about is why a single nonsystem drive would gum up the whole works.

This is normal. If one of your devices goes bad and windows cannot figure it out then it would try to resolve/fix it causing the delay.
