Hi there,

Another challenge for the experts ! Without going into too much detail, by moving hard disks around etc. I managed to screw up my 8.1 boot settings.
Partition-wise I should be ok as the 350mb "system" partition is still there, containing all necessary files.
System will however go straight for automatic repair and tell me it was not able to repair the problem.
bootrec /scanos returns 0. Bcd file seems fine when I take it through bcdedit. Renaming the bcd file and trying to rebuild one doesn't work either as it says there's no installation found.

I did not touch any partitions nor files btw, everything is still there and in tact as far as I know.

Thx in advance !

by moving hard disks around etc. I managed to screw up my 8.1 boot settings.

Make sure the Windows 8 HD drive is first device in BIOS.

True, yet I didn't want to elaborate because the source has little to do with the solution to my opinion, and would only cause confusion and looking in the wrong direction.

I always like to see a Disk Management picture, especially when multiple drives are involved.

Sure, I'm more than happy to provide any details to help solve it.

Judging from the reactions I'll just briefly explain what happened:

I have 4 drives in total (3 HD's, 1 SSD). The first HD has W7x64 on it. The SSD has 8.1x64 on it. Both installed independantly from each other. As I have done so many times, I wanted to add the SSD with 8.1 to the system to allow dual-boot with W7.
The W7 disk has Acronis OS Selector on it so what usually happens (and didn't in this case) is that OS Selector finds the 8.1 SSD and adds it to it's list of selectable operating systems.

Instead, for some reason, it went the other way around: I got to see 8.1's boot manager and it added the W7 disk instead. So I disconnect both drives again, the W7 disk still booted fine. The 8.1 not so ...

Ever since, I get the attempt to auto-repair stuff. Like I said: tried all the usual like bootrec, bcdboot, etc. to no avail.

Now about that disk management screen: please explain exactly what you would like to see in order to help ?

Open Disk Management (Diskmgmt.msc or Winkey+X and select Disk Management) and use the snipping tool to take a picture of the window. Expand it enough so we can see the comments about the partitions. Having all the drives connected would be good so we could see the entire configuration.

I am also not familiar with the operation of the Acronis Booter so running the command below in an administrative command prompt and attaching the resulting text file might help. But if they are independent installs, and you only have the SSD connected, it should boot by itself, unless the boot files are located somewhere else or corrupted.

bcdedit /enum all > %userprofile%\Desktop\bcdtext.txt

If you are using the PowerShell window, use this.

bcdedit /enum all > $Env:userprofile\Desktop\bcdtext.txt

Just to be clear: as I stated in the thread title I am not able to boot. Therefore, cannot provide any disk management screenshots.

As I also said the SSD is the only drive connected. I'm trying to restore/recreate correct boot settings, which is what I need help with as the usual stuff doesn't seem to work for me

OK.. if you can't boot, you certainly can't show any information. But I never said you needed to be booted into Windows 8..

I know, but putting it back together with that W7 drive is a no-go. I don't want to risk messing up the W7 drive too, as the combination of both drives is what started it all in the first place ...

Which was one of the reasons I didn't want to go into too much detail at first :)

But anyway, I have a good 8.1 drive that doesn't boot. That's the starting point. It looks like all is ok but it's not ... so I'm a bit in the dark now on how to proceed in getting it to boot again
