Customizing Shortcuts By Modifying The Registry

Hello All,

I read in another forum that you can stop Windows from adding "- Shortcut" to shortcuts by modifying the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\link

To do so, you have to change the binary data from 1e 00 00 00 to 00 00 00 00.

I did this and it works great. I want to go a bit further, however.

Whenever I create shortcuts to files that have an extension (e.g. .txt) the shortcut ends up having the file extension as well.

I was wondering, is there any way to modify the same registry setting (or some other one) to also remove the extension for shortcuts?

Thank you,

Jan

P.S. Is there any way I can find out how to interpret registry binary data so I know what to change? How can I find out what each bit does?

Thewindowsclub.com has a tweaking utility that is a rollover from their Windows 7 tweaking tool. It will do various items, such as also removing the shortcut arrow and the word "shortcut". Another tool is EnhanceMy8 EnhanceMy8 - A tweaking and maintenance tool for Windows 8 I have never had any problems using their tools with both Windows 7 & 8. Just use risk like any tool that is used for certain reasons on any system. Always make a backup of the system, before making any changes.

David, the problem with hiding the extensions of certain items. Is that if a user comes here asking for help and does not know to uncheck that box. It ends up being a huge headache for all. I leave it unchecked on any system that I setup for someone, or work on. Especially when you are cleaning off malware.

I leave it unchecked also.

When suggesting something I assume they will remember what they did.

It's up to them to do it or not.
