Hi,

I installed win8 on my home pc & laptop over XP & vista respectively.

I am using classic shell in Windows 8 on my home pc & laptop.

On the PC "desktop" shows in file explorer but, on the laptop it does not show, please see the left attachment as opposed to the right one of the PC.

In addition, the laptop one shows the partitions spread out as opposed to the PC.

Anybody knows how to make the laptop show things as per PC? .....thanx ....nick

Hello Nichos,

Do you have a "Favorites" group at the top of the navigation pane with a "Desktop" in it on your laptop like on the right screenshot?

It seems like it's a remnant from Vista. The tutorial below may be able to help with it.

Navigation Pane - Simple Folder View

I may be wrong, but don't you have to perform a clean install when going from Vista to Windows 8?

To the OP: If in fact you were able to upgrade from Vista to Windows 8 without doing a clean install, I would seriously recommend performing a clean installation of Windows 8 before you make too many customizations, etc. Simply installing an OS over the top of an existing version of Windows is just asking for problems - especially quirky little things like what you are experiencing; and not only will the reliability of your machine suffer, but your performance is going to take a huge hit as well. If in fact you did perform a clean install, disregard.

Thanx,

1. Navigation Pane - Simple Folder View does not seem to have anything for w8

2. How do I reformat the laptop HD for a w8n clean install?

the folder options in w8 have nothing about twicking Nav.Pane, or am I looking in the wrong place? .....nick

I would have to guess that the lines may be caused by a setting in Classic Shell. Check to see if there may be a setting for it to turn off.

By jove Brink you made it, Nav.Pane was set to win XP, I moved to Vista & it worked. I checked on the PC & is on Vista.

Any chance on how to make the two see each other & exchange files e.t.c ? (home network?)

1. The PC can not see the laptop and asks for my W8 user name & password. I tried all the ones that I can find with no luck.

2 Laptop sees all partitions of pc but, when I drag a file into the laptop it becomes a shortcut & does not open. Will not even accept to see the C:\ primary partition & says ask the administrator, who is me anyway??

If you like, you could create a homegroup on one computer, then join the same homegroup on the other computer.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/15824-homegroup-create-windows-8-a.html

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/15831-homegroup-join-windows-8-a.html

You could then easily share files between them in the libraries, or via the Network folder with folders/files you set to share with the homegroup.
