I'm impressed!

Well, I've been running the Consumer Preview since its release, and I have to give a shout out to it, it's impressive performance wise! Not only is the CP impressive, the Developer Preview had some solid performance with it as well. And when I speak of performance, I speak of cold boot and restart times. Shutdown and startup on hybrid boot is fast and all, but what I find impressive is how the cold boot times have stayed strong. It hasn't been taking longer to restart or cold boot. I also have seen this on the Developer Preview as well, and I ran that for a good SIX months. Normally, in Windows 7, I had to do some advance witchcraft of my own to keep it running in top notch usually every once a month. In the DP, I never had to do anything other than do some defragging and letting Automatic Maintenance do its thing. In the CP, it's the same story.

If things continue this way, maybe cold boot and restart in the Release Candidate is even more solid and overall, everything is more solid!

Can't say I've noticed a difference myself.

Win 8 boots about as quickly on the AS5735 as Win 7 64-bit boots on this one (AS8951).

The 5735 has more of a load on, though, as it's an upgrade over a 2+ year-old Win 7
Ultimate setup, and is on an older, less powerful machine.

This one, being new, is still 'clean'.

So, all other things being equal, Win 8 would be a tad faster, but only a tad.


**EDIT: It does boot very quickly on my old Pentium 4HT desktop, tho.**

I never really understood why boot times are that important although the media do seem to make a great thing of it.

I'm with Kat on this as I haven't noticed any faster boot times running Win8 on a separate partition on my Samsung laptop - maybe I've got the thing configured incorrectly. Win7 on this laptop though is loaded with programs whereas Win8 is booting 'naked'.

not really impressed much seems the same and some features like windows start button taken away just turns me off more. Other then that similar to win 7 with a metro interface that just holds icons like your programs....

Speaking of Windows 7, I've been reading that 7 boots on average about 54 seconds. I find that to be an eternity compared to how fast I can get it to boot. I once had a laptop that used to have vista on it, installed 7 on it as well as Kaspersky Internet Security and from power on to Windows booted and KIS started, it took 33 seconds. I have NEVER seen 7 take that long to boot up unless if there are third party startup items enabled.

Glad to hear some postitive comments Cokerobot. Win 8 is in some ways quite different and too many people comment before getting to grips with it.

I think it is fast. I can see that when I boot the system from a USB stick or a USB attached HDD. But from the SSD the difference is small.

Are you kidding? Everybody in the US knows that the Metro is fast, clean, efficient, well-run, and cheap. Sort of like the American bureaucracy.

How does the other side of the pond view metro design? I've read that the Nokia Lumia 800 running Windows Phone 7 with Mango update has been doing well there.

I don't get it. I have used the Paris Metro for many years to go to and from work. Never thought of it in negative terms. It is extremely handy to get from A to B.
