lock screen content server has stopped working

Hello,

I am experiencing an error in relation to my lock screen. I have my lock screen set up to display a slideshow instead of turning off the monitor. Intermittently, upon returning to my computer and clicking the mouse I receive an error that states the lock screen content server has stopped working and needs to close. Upon acknowledging the error by clicking ok or whatever the button says the error goes away and all appears to be well. This issue doesn't appear to actually effect the slideshow. For me this is mostly just an annoyance but it is something I would like to solve. Upon reviewing my event log I can identify two potentially related errors. One is with LockScreenContentServer.exe and the other is with LogonUI.exe. Both appear to have a common denominator with nvwgf2umx.dll. I have a GTX 670 installed, running the Nvidia 340.52 drivers, which are the current WHQL drivers. I have windows 8.1 64 installed as well as all current windows updates. I also have Classic Shell installed. Currently my lock screen is set to not require a password to log back in. This error has occurred with a password required as well. I also only have a local account established instead of linking to a Microsoft account.

Previous searching turned up this thread:

http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/46311-logonui-nvwgf2umx-dll-application-error.html

The information in the aforementioned thread did not help as I cannot find that particular windows update installed on my computer. I appreciate any input regarding this matter, thank you.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have tried SFC and DISM. A clean install was recently performed. I have also downloaded all of the recommended windows updates. This error continues to occur.

Has anyone found a fix for this? I've been having this problem for a while as well. Much appreciated.

I had the same issue as 1YvD87rvsE0X . The Link to the Microsoft thread above is useless and has no solution. I was able to get this problem to fix itself by Downloading Ccleaner and running the registry cleaning tool. Once the tool scanned and repaired what was necessary I restarted my computer and I am no longer having lock screen issues.

Not so sure about the CCleaner fix. I run it monthly to keep file system and registry clean. Issue persists after running registry cleaner tool again.

Do you have the latest version of ccleaner? I was getting the problem of not being able to press "windows key" + L to Lock my screen, it just wouldn't work. I had to press Ctrl+alt+delete and click lock to lock my computer. My lock screen also consists of a slide show, once I unlocked my screen I would get the same error, the lockscreen content server was not working.

Hope you guys get the same type of outcome, this problem was kind of annoying....

It is important to always keep all programs up to date.

It sounds like you're experiencing a much different issue if your lock screen was not functional. Can you provide Windows Event Log information of the crash event on your machine? The issue we are discussing is nvidia driver nvwgf2umx.dll interrupting the LockScreenContent Server process. Thank you.

Thanks for providing. Looks about right. Let us know if the issue crops up for you again. How long have you been running error free?

Hey no problem! Anything to help a fellow geek :). I just fixed it with Ccleaner about 15 to 20 minutes ago. I had this issue for several weeks before getting fed up with it.

Ok. I find the issue intermittent with occurrences ranging from minutes to hours while playing lock screen slideshow. Is your slideshow still enabled on lock screen? I get no errors when slideshow is disabled. Cheers.

This was caused by firmware issues with my Corsair Neutron SSD. It was also causing occasional blue screens. Updated firmware and have been running for over a month with no problems.
