I am trying to download the Windows 8.1 ISO image so I can repair my current windows configuration. However, it is asking me for the product key. I purchased Windows 8 from the Windows store. Any assistance is appreciated.

Hello Pittguy,

If you like, you could use OPTION ONE in the tutorial below to download a Windows 8.1 ISO with your retail Windows 8 key.

When you do a clean install, you would need to enter a generic key to install 8.1. After installation is finished, you would change the key to your Windows 8 key to activate. All details below.

Hope this helps, :)

Thanks for the response. I chatted with MS support. I don't have a 8.1 key. I purchased 8 and did the free upgrade.
They told me to download the 8 ISO and reinstall 8 and then upgrade.

I am just worried about having to reinstall my programs if I do that. It's not an urgent issue.I don't plan on uninstalling anything soon, but I want it to get resolved. If I go back to 8, will my programs still be there?

Sorry, but no. You would have to reinstall all programs afterwards since it would be a clean install.

If you like, you could create a system image and/or custom recovery image to use if needed to help avoid doing a clean install. A system image would include everything.
