Custom built PC with Windows 8.1 continually Freezes

Hello all, about two months ago I built my PC and everything was great and no problems whatsoever until about a month ago.

In short, my PC freezes when I'm just browing the web. It doesn't happen when I'm decoding a video, or when I'm playing a game, or running an emulator. It always happens when I'm browsing, or during idle. All of a sudden there's a slowdown, and the right mouse click menu takes a while to appear. When the right click menu appears it's kind of transparant/greyish and then it fully appears but none of the options work. For example I right click on the desktop and click task manager, but it never appears. I can minimize/maximize windows but cannot close or open new ones. Then it's completely frozen, I can't do anything other than move the mouse around.

Yet Metro UI still works, somewhat until it slows down and completely freezes again. I cannot restart or shut down PC, I have to do it manually by holding down power button or pressing the reset button.

I get no error messages... I used to have malware antibytes installed but removed it following advice from a thread in TomsHardware. I have all the drivers up to date (motherboard, sound, graphics card, intel, and windows updates of course).

Deleted graphics drivers and installed latest ones and the problem still persists.

These are my specs:

Intel i7 4790k
R9 290
8GB RAM 1600 Mhz
1 TB HDD
Windows 8.1
EVGA Nova G2 750 Watt PSU
MSI Z97 gaming 5 motherboard
Corair Hydro h100i

I have dual monitors set up, one at 1920x1080 and another one at 1600 x900 on DVI from graphics card.

Any advice? I have looked ay microsoft support forums and there's a lot of people with similar issues but no official word from a Microsoft tech person or solution.

Thanks in advanced!

Edit: It's happening very frequently now, after about 15 minutes, no matter what I do.

Have you ran a disk check on your hard drive, or used HD Tune Pro to see if it has any issues?

Also, try doing a memtest (Windows Memory Test) and do several thorough passes to check if the RAM is at fault. I had an issue come up after I built my system where it wouldn't take all 16 gigs of RAM and wouldn't boot into Windows. Something fixed it, don't remember.

If that all passes, do a system restore if you can to a month ago before you had these issues and/or run a system file checker (sfc /scannow in elevated command prompt).

Also, what browser are you using?
