Heres my situation. Im trying to help my dad out. He has a Dell laptop with Win 8.1, He recently started getting a window during startup that had a random file name and would say (Is not responding). We could not figure out what the problem was. So we decided to try a selective startup. Using MSCONFIG the option was selected to use Diagnostic Startup.

Since doing that we cant load windows. Well, Windows starts, but when it asks for his pin number to enter his desktop we enter it. Once we do that it simply comes up with a screen that shows his user picture large in the middle of the screen with his name (like he needs to select his user) and if you click on it then you are taking back to the screen to enter the pin. If the pin is entered it goes right back to that screen. I decided maybe we should try to start the computer in safe mode. We try to, but it asks for his actual password, which he cant remember. It asks for that same password if we try anything else in the Startup options.

I really need some help on this as soon as possible.

I really hope someone can help me with this. We've tried every combination of password we can think of that my dad might have used and cant seem to remember the right one. I really need to help get windows started again because my dad has work files he needs to access very soon.

Any helps is greatly appreciated.

You can use some Live linux distro to save your files, it just runs from CD/USB, no need to install it.

The LiveCD List - For example: SystemRescueCd - Then you will just reinstall/refresh Windows.

Thanks for the info. alphanumeric, I complete respect that we can not discuss hacking/cracking passwords here. Definitely not my intention. I just needed to know how to get out of the login loop that I was stuck at. Unfortunately, I dont think there is a solution without using the built in Dell Recovery.

TairikuOkami, thanks for that recommendation. I will be doing just that. Ive used the diagnostic option so many times and never had this issue, now I will be worried if I ever think I might have to use it. Oh well. Time to run recovery. Thanks again for the info.

We'll definitely try to help you sort it out, we just have to be careful what we post so as not to break any forum rules is all. It was also a heads up as to why people may be reluctant to reply to your post. It's a tricky situation. I think you were 15 hours or so with no replays when I posted. Forgotten passwords always end up being a pain.
